What Is HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training)?
HIIT workouts consist of short bursts of exercise performed at extreme levels of intensity and effort, pushing the maximum heart rate (MHR) as high as 90%. Recent fitness studies show that a HIIT workout can burn as much as 9 times the fat as a regular cardiovascular routine. HIIT exercises are high-intensity and designed for sustained fat loss without affecting muscle mass and fullness. Compared to traditional steady-state cardio exercise with low to moderate intensity exercise performed at 60%-70% of maximum heart rate, HIIT better helps break through fitness plateaus otherwise not possible.
This is especially appealing to well-conditioned athletes who find performance improvements difficult to achieve, even with longer training sessions and increased frequency.
