This sport is a martial art style that I have been studying for a while now. I used to to be a wrestler and mixed martial arts fighter but I have quit both and focus solely on wing chun these days. WC is very different from other types of martial arts in many ways. First of all it focuses only on self defense and does not have any tournaments or competitions you can participate in, this is because the moves you learn are pretty dangerous and would injure a lot of people if they were to be used in tournaments.
The second thing that differentiates wing chun from other martial arts is that the founder of WC was actually a woman. Because wing chun was created and developed by a woman it has a lot of feminine values. First of all wing chun is not supposed to be about physical strength and with the techniques you learn you will easily be able to beat up a lot stronger guys by using a couple of simple concepts. These concepts include the centerline theory, the centerline theory is the theory that the fastest way between two points is a straight line, therefore wing chun punches are all straight and they don't use hooks life for example boxers do. The second concept of WC is all about deflecting the power and use the opponents power and strength against himself. I have tried fighting against a couple of wing chun masters and even with my mixed martial arts and wrestling skills there is not a lot I can do once they get into their wing chun flow and start blasting away 10-15 chain punches at the time.
WC focuses heavily on very fast chain punches that will hit you continuously until you hit the floor or give up. WC is a great self defense style for anyone who wants to learn to defend themselves as fast as possible without having to rely on athletic ability and having a lot of strength and flexibility. Even though wing chun uses kicks they only use kicks to the knees and to groin as high kicks are just too risky to use on the street and in a self defense situation.
It is not hard to find WC schools as it is a very popular sport and you can definitely find one in your local area if you search.

The three hand sets are shown in detail, along with the application of the key movements. One of the keys to Wing Chun is laying a proper foundation. The first form Siu Lim Tao (Little Idea) is the development of that foundation. Here, you will be introduced to the proper reference points for the structure of the defensive tools and offensive weapons of Wing Chun. The second form, Chum Kiu (Seeking the Bridge), introduces the keys to fighting application of Wing Chun. While the first form teaches the correct structure of the attacks and defensive movements, it is in Chum Kiu that the student learns to "seek the bridge" and use both hands simultaneously, such as one hand defending while the other attacks. Wing Chun Kuen by Buckler, Dr Scott [Paperback] $172.06 Wing Chun is a pragmatic combat system which retains its fighting heritage. However this fighting heritage is of questionable origin. Indeed why did Wing Chun develop? Furthermore although the style has developed exponentially, what actually motivates practitioners to train? This is the first academically researched book into Wing Chun comparing the past and present. The book rewrites the traditional Wing Chun history, providing a more reasoned and informative account for the styles development. Central to the book is the concept of transformation: transformation of the style from the past to the present, and the transformatory effect of training on the individual. Specifically the book explores The myth of the Southern Shaolin Temple The link between the Triads and Wing Chun The identity of the founder of Wing Chun The philosophy integral to Wing Chun The psychological benefits of training The differences between Wing Chun practitioners and other martial artists. The book is written predominantly for an academic audience, although equally, any reader interested in an informed discussion of Wing Chuns history, philosophy and psychology.
