Tips on Choosing a Karate Gi

Karate is a contact sport that has recently gained a great deal of popularity. It has a tremendous following among the population of Asia. Sports shops offer many different types of karate uniforms, which are also called karate gi. When you are shopping for a karate gi, you need to take a few factors into consideration.

The first thing to keep in mind is the size of the karate uniform. The gi's size should directly correspond to the height of the karateka, and this is the main criterion. Other factors to consider are weight, along with the length of the arms and legs. Avoid purchasing a gi that fits perfectly at the store, because it will probably shrink after being washed several times. If you buy a gi that is slightly larger, it will fit perfectly after it is worn and washed a few times. Karate gi are available in an assortment of colors.

Frequently, the karate school will decide which color its students should wear. Traditional karate schools prefer white gi, but black, blue and even red gi are sometimes used. Some schools add a special patch on their students' uniforms to distinguish themselves from others. Another important aspect of karate gi to consider is their quality. Three weights of karate uniforms are now being sold. Weighing only about six ounces, the lightweight uniform rips easily when grappled during intensive training. After an intensive workout, a lightweight uniform also clings uncomfortably to the karateka. A light canvas-type material offers improved quality. A gi made of this fabric will not rip even when used during vigorous training sessions. It will be able to absorb sweat and is quite comfortable for the karateka to wear. This type of karate gi weights about ten ounces and is the most popular type. A heavier gi that weighs fourteen ounces is also available. It absorbs the most sweat and is able to keep the karateka cool throughout the entire training session.

Manufacturers are able to soften the canvas fabric and make it much more comfortable to wear. The only drawback of this type of gi is the amount of space it occupies in your training bag. A traditional karate gi uses a drawstring waist which helps keep the pants from slipping off, even if they are pulled. The hem of the gi should be much wider than the drawstring to provide an additional safeguard. Manufacturers have recently incorporated an elastic waistband into the pants. You still must use a string to protect the elastic, however. The drawback is that the elastic hinders breathing during training by applying a constant pressure on the karateka's stomach. Karate gi are available in a traditional cut and a tournament cut. The former has longer sleeves and pants than the tournament cut. Some people believe the tournament cut enables a karateka to be more mobile and faster, but this opinion is subjective and has not been proven. After you find the karate gi that suits your purpose, it is a good idea to buy two pairs because you might find it difficult to find another one you like. Gi manufacturers typically follow the same set of standards, so one brand is not really better than another.
