5 Pointers for Using a Weighted Running Vest

A lot of athletes are always looking for new ways to make them faster and stronger; one way of improving their speed is through the use of weighted running vests.  The weighted west is able to work because it forces your body to adapt to the new body weight.  When you’re running and doing plyometric exercises, your body will adapt to the weighted running vest as best as possible.  And when the time comes for you to finally take off the vest, your speed will be increased!  However, if you plan to use a vest, then keep these pointers in mind:

1. Remember that you shouldn’t rush yourself into using weighted running vests.  Before you start doing significant running or intense plyo exercises, you should do some light training with the vest about a month or two before your regular training.  Start slowly and work your way up.  This point is important because as you train more intensely, the forces you feel on your musculoskeletal system during a running or plyo workout are usually <i>much</i> greater than the usual forces you feel during a regular workout.  It doesn’t make sense for you to multiply the strength of these forces even more using the weighted running vest until you’re truly ready to take on the additional weight.

2. When you finally <i>do</i> decide to wear a vest, you should use it as much as you can during your everyday life, not just during your workout.  This way, your body can completely adjust to the additional weight.

3. While professional athletes may start out with vests that are about 10% of their body weight, we highly don’t recommend you do the same thing, because your body may not be able to handle that sort of strain right away.  Start with something low, such as 2% and slowly move up to 10% as your musculoskeletal system improves.

4. Don’t use ankle weights! They’re not a substitute for weighted running vests! These objects may increase our risk of injury.

5. It’s alright to run on hills during a training session with weight vests on.  But because they’re much harder, it’s recommended that you do significant hill training without the vest first, and then gradually add on weights.
