BJJ Kimonos are all made to have a collar but each Jiu Jitsu Gis collar is made differently. BJJ Kimonos with thick collars are believed to reduce the ability for your opponent to choke you. However, some Jiu Jitsu fighters may believe that the really thick collars are bad because it will make you feel like you are choking yourself out since it is so thick. At times when people wear BJJ Kimonos with really thick collars very tightly wrapped, it may feel as the collar is already choking them. The collars are also known as the lapel which signifies the whole collar starting from the bottom of your Gi going all the way up to your collar and back down the other side. Usually this lapel on your BJJ Kimonos would be made of rubber and covered with cotton. So you may ask what is better a thick or thin collar? Well the answer is, it is your own personal preference. Try them both out and whichever suits you best, than that is the best for you. A normal sized one from a Pearl Weave Gi would be best if you want it to be in the middle, not to thin and not too thick.
The sleeves on your Jiu Jitsu Kimonos can also play a factor when choosing your Jiu Jitsu Gi. Some companies have made their sleeve cuffs very wide and some have made there's more narrow. Again this comes down to personal preference. Wide sleeve cuffs can seem a bit baggy and allow your opponent to easily grip them using his spider guard and other techniques however they could be beneficial to you because they may help you with your chokes such as the Ezekiel choke. It is also recommended to be careful purchasing your BJJ Kimonos that have narrow sleeves to make sure they are not too narrow as they may not be accepted by the strict IBJJF Gi rules, especially after you shrink them. So be sure your Jiu Jitsu Gis have great collar strength as well as good cuff sizing that is IBJJF Approved before your next BJJ Gi purchase.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Advanced $30.78 Unlike most other martial arts, jiu-jitsu involves no spectacular throws and kicks and no ceremonial bows. Unlike boxing, it has no punching. And unlike virtually every other fighting technique, it does not rely on brute strength. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a form of self-defense that takes place almost entirely on the ground although its falling techniques from a standing position are a distinctive mark among competitors. Fighters use snakelike grappling moves to choke their opponent, or, with the weight of their entire body, they press against key joints, bringing them close to the breaking point. This practical guide builds on its predecessor Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Basic Techniques, offering specific intermediate and advanced instruction as well as illuminating historical context. Acclaimed author Fabio Gurgel explains the discipline`s origins with the ancient Samurai; its seminal place as the father of the major Japanese martial arts, including judo and aikido, as well as its influence on karate. Gurgel describes the mental techniques of jiu-jitsu that have made him one of the sport`s superstars, teaching how to achieve self-confidence, self-esteem, stress relief, and an increased ability to focus. Written in a clear, accessible style and incorporating a wealth of black-and-white photographs, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Advanced Techniques offers world-class training to help readers realize their ultimate potential in this popular art. |
