Every day thousands of people are killed and injured on our roads. Men, women or children walking, biking or riding to school or work, playing in the streets or setting out on long trips, will never return home, leaving behind shattered families and communities. Millions of people each year will spend long weeks in hospital after severe crashes and many will never be able to live, work or play as they used to do. Current efforts to address road safety are minimal in comparison to this growing human suffering. The World Health Organization and the World Bank have jointly produced this World report on road traffic injury prevention. Its purpose is to present a comprehensive overview of what is known about the magnitude, risk factors and impact of road traffic injuries, and about ways to prevent and lessen the impact of road crashes. The document is the outcome of a collaborative effort by institutions and individuals. Over 100 experts, from all continents and different sectors including transport, engineering, health, police, education and civil society have worked to produce the report. Road traffic injuries are a growing public health issue, disproportionately affecting vulnerable groups of road users, including the poor. But road traffic crashes and injuries are preventable. Road traffic injury prevention must be incorporated into a broad range of activities, such as the development and management of road infrastructure, mobility planning, the provision of health and hospital services, child welfare services, and urban and environmental planning. The health sector is an important partner in this process. Its roles are to strengthen the evidence base, provide appropriate pre-hospital and hospital care and rehabilitation, conduct advocacy, and contribute to the implementation and evaluation of interventions. The time to act is now. Road safety is no accident. It requires strong political will and concerted, sustained efforts across a range of sectors. Acting now will save lives.

Spinal Cord Injury Physical Breakthrough

Spinal Cord Injury Physical Breakthrough

My goal in writing this book on spinal cord injured true case histories and documented since year 1984, is to inform the quadriplegic and paraplegic that they can be helped presently, and it is not as hopeless as they are told. I have made a breakthrough with a paraplegic T10, in year 1984, who was told that there is no more help for him, after several years of therapy, and in only 10 hourly sessions, I had him stand up from the wheelchair and walk with my "hands on" method and technique. 1987, I worked on a quadriplegic C5-C6 and in several months he improved with his walking and reduced the spasticity in the body and legs. 1991, I worked with a paraplegic T5, whose legs were spastic and crippled after several years of no help from the previous therapy and in only several months I has him stand on his feet, and corrected the crippling. 1998, I worked on a quadriplegic complete C4-C5, and restored his spastic arms and hands, and he was able to do his homework at school. All of these spinal cord injured were told that there is no more help. I believe that many disabled people are mislead, as the above, including stroke, Parkinson, Muscular Dystrophy, ALS.Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Scleros. As a Florida State Licensed Massage Therapist for over 25 years, and a member of The American Massage Therapy Association, Member Of The Florida State Message Therapy Association Lic# MA 000 3352 I have treated people disabled with spinal cord injury after the conventional therapy was of no help, and continues till present day. "Spinal Cord Injury" is a physical injury to the spinal cord, and is due to most often to an accident, and can be treated with my "hands on" METHOD AND TECHINIQUE till presentday, Neuromuscular Massage Therapy Method.

""Walking This Walk," How hard places force us to determine who we are and what we really believe. by Brad Erlandson Walking This Walk is the story of one man's journey from darkness to light, the challenges of rightly dividing the Word of God, and discerning God's will for his life. Brad Erlandson, in the course of telling his life story, urges us to examine our own faith and doctrine, drawing upon the book of Job and Paul's prison epistles, as well as prominent Christian writers. Erlandson shares his own struggles in the face of calamity, having been struck by a drunk driver in 2002, resulting in the spinal cord injury which left him in a wheelchair. Through all the physical and emotional pain, his quest for knowing and loving God through Jesus Christ has continued, as well as his call to teach and share the Word of God with others. Erlandson holds a B.A. in Theology from Toccoa Falls College and a M.A. in Religion from Liberty Universty. Quotes from Walking This Walk: "Being in hard places forces us to determine what we really believe and who we really are." "Life can cause you to go deeper or give up, to get bitter or become better." "God is always looking at what is going on inside when things are falling apart on the outside." "Every prayer Jesus prayed was answered because He asked according to God's will. Sometimes we ask things that are Biblically appropriate, but are not God's will for that moment." "Know that it is about the heart and about your reaction to the whole storm that has come upon you. If you caused the storm, all the more, you must hold on and believe that God is with you and for you and, in time, will turn things around.""

Walking Papers is the incredibly inspiring story of a young man who wouldn't give up. Francesco Clark was a twenty-four-year-old with a bright future when he went to Long Island for the weekend--but a nocturnal dive into the pool's shallow end changed everything, forever. Paralyzed from the neck down, Francesco was told by his doctors that he would never move from his bed or even breathe without assistance. But Francesco fought back. Within days, he was breathing on his own. His father, a doctor himself, investigated every opportunity for experimental treatment, and Francesco used every resource available to speed his recovery. To avoid having his lungs painfully suctioned, he sang, loudly, for hours--and that was just the beginning. Francesco moved back home with his parents and began the long process toward recovery. Many doctors discourage patients with spinal cord injury from pursuing physical therapy beyond very basic movements, but Francesco embarked on a five-hour daily regimen, including the treadmill program that Christopher Reeve had made famous. Soon he astounded the medical establishment with his progress. Francesco's accident also left him unable to sweat out toxins, leaving his complexion poor. He and his father began to experiment, and the Clark's Botanicals skin-care line was born. Now CB products are sold worldwide in stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, and the company has won many major fashion awards and is enjoyed by a host of celebrities. The lessons Francesco learned about persistence from his recovery process, and the loving support of his amazing family, have both contributed to his incredible business success. Seven years after the accident, Francesco continues to improve and to surprise his doctors--for instance, he can now work on a computer. Walking Papers is the inspiring story of how, with individual determination and unconditional family support, Francesco Clark overcame extreme adversity and achieved an extraordinary triumph. Praise for Walking Papers by Francesco Clark " Walking Papers so beautifully illuminates the tenacity of the human spirit and the desire to choose hope in the face of overwhelming odds. Francesco's fresh, engrossing book proves that a disability or diagnosis is not a death sentence, but a life sentence. His journey so aptly illustrates that there is life after devastation and trauma. I found myself cheering him from every page." --Lee Woodruff, coauthor, In an Instant "Francesco Clark's personal journey is an inspiration to everyone. His triumph and achievements over adversity reflect the determination and faith of the human spirit." --John Demsey, president, Este Lauder "I read Francesco Clark's Walking Papers when I should have been working, and was immediately swept into his story of crisis and hope. His doctors, his nurses, friends, and family all try to protect him from false hope. But Francesco's will is irrepressible and potent. His story is the

A new approach to using walking to heal emotional trauma and bring forth optimal mental functioning B?" Explores why and how we carry emotional wounds, and how they can be healed and resolved B?" Shows how walking stimulates both sides of the brain to promote and restore mental health B?" Provides simple, yet potent, mental exercises to use while walking Our bodies usually heal rapidly from an illness, injury, or wound. Yet our minds and hearts often suffer for years with debilitating symptoms of distress or upset. Why is it so hard for our minds and hearts to heal? The key to healing them is simple and can be just a short walk away.Walking--a bilateral therapy that has been a part of human life throughout history--allows people to heal emotionally as quickly as they do physically. Bilateral therapies engage both sides of the brain and unlock natural states of optimal function and creativity. Thom Hartmann examines how memory works and why emotional shock can resist normal healing. He found that the simple act of walking is effective in treating emotional disturbances ranging from temporary upsets and problems to chronic conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. Case studies have shown dramatic results. Walking consciously, while holding a distress or desire in mind, can rapidly dissolve the rigidity of a traumatic memory or negative mind state, dispersing its unpleasant associations in as little as a half hour`s time. While walking has always been a natural part of life, its importance in promoting and maintaining mental health is only recently being rediscovered. Hartmann`s simple yet potent exercises allow us to create our own walking journeys to restore our mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being as well as rejuvenate our body`s health.

Injury is recognized as a major public health issue worldwide. In most countries, injury is the leading cause of death and disability for children and young adults age 1 to 39 years. Each year in the United States, injury claims about 170,000 lives and results in over 30 million emergency room visits and 2.5 million hospitalizations. Injury is medically defined as organ/tissue damages inflicted upon oneself or by an external agent either accidentally or deliberately. Injury encompasses the undesirable consequences of a wide array of events, such as motor vehicle crashes, poisoning, burns, falls, and drowning, medical error, adverse effects of drugs, suicide and homicide. The past two decades have witnessed a remarkable growth in injury research, both in scope and in depth. To address the tremendous health burden of injury morbidity and mortality at the global level, the World Health Organization in 2000 created the Department of Injury and Violence Prevention, which has produced several influential reports on violence, traffic injury, and childhood injury. The biennial World Conference on Injury Control and Safety Promotion attracts a large international audience and has been successfully convened nine times in different countries. In the United States, the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control became an independent program of the federal Centers for Disease Prevention and Control in 1997. Since then, each state health department has created an office in charge of injury prevention activities and over a dozen universities have established injury control research centers. This volume will fill an important gap in the scientific literature by providing a comprehensive and up-to-date reference resource to researchers, practitioners, and students working on different aspects of the injury problem and in different practice settings and academic fields.
