Walking Exercise Dvd

Managing diabetes is a hard job. But there are some tools that give diabetics the upper hand when trying to control their diabetes. One of the best ways diabetics can manage their diabetes is through daily exercise combined with the right diet. Let's face it, even if you don't want to get up and go to the gym, once you get there working out just makes you feel good. The rewards are both physical and psychological. Physically, muscle-building reduces insulin resistance. Psychologically, exercise is often prescribed to combat depression. This is just a win-win situation anyway you look at it.

The question is what type of exercise is best for diabetics and how much should they do? Moderate exercise seems to fit the bill. If you are just starting an exercise program please check with your physician first. Start slowly and work up to longer periods of strength building. Weight lifting, swimming, jogging, fast walking, Pilates, stability ball exercises and line dancing are all good forms of exercise for diabetics. As it turns out, many Type II diabetics might have a small sugar rise doing brief exercise, but prolonged exercise can lower it. While 10 minutes is too short a period 30 to 60 minutes is about right. The bonus is that building muscle helps to burn calories and that continues after you stop exercising.

Is joining a gym a must? That is entirely your choice. Whether exercising at home or joining a gym, each has benefits. Bike riding, fast walking, jogging, swimming, all done outdoors are excellent ways to exercise. Many prefer to exercise at home using DVD's, Fit TV, and those old tapes from the 70's and 80's that I still own and use. Working out at the gym has the benefit of working with others, the chance to hire a personal trainer, and the availability of an extensive array of gym equipment.

The main point is, do some sort of exercise at least 5 days a week. I try to do this every week. Do I always make it? No, sometimes life gets in the way and I miss a workout. But I get back to my routine as soon as possible. Strive for at least 45 minutes a day, every day.

The truth is, without exercise I would have a hard time managing and controlling my diabetes.

Whatever type of exercise you choose, the important thing is to get out there and do it. You'll actually find that you too, can reach your goals and manage your diabetes.
