Training Sports Equipment

Speed and agility training is a necessity for any hockey player who wants to maximize their on-ice abilities. Speed and agility on skates are what separate good players from great players, and no one can be dominant in hockey without focusing on these areas. Here are some great tips on using your time in the off-season to get faster and quicker on the ice.

First of all, you should focus on getting faster when you do your dry land training and in the gym. Whether you run, bike or inline skate, it's important to focus on increasing your speed. The best way to do this is to incorporate intervals into your workout. Intervals are sets of intense output followed by low intensity output. For pure speed increase, run, bike, or blade intervals of 30 seconds at your absolute maximum output followed by a couple minutes at a light pace.

It's important that you always time yourself. If you don't time yourself, you have no way to measure your improvements. Also, timing yourself gives you goals to try and beat. Whenever you do your training, make a note of your fastest time, and make it your goal to beat it next time. Setting goals like this will really result in increases in your gains.

A great way to improve foot speed, agility and power is to incorporate plyometrics into your workouts. Plyometrics focus on fast, explosive movements and utilize a lot of jumping, hoping and bounding, and does great things for hockey.

Following these simple tips will help you get the most out of your off season workouts, and these exercises will increase your speed, both on and off the ice. However, these are only a few of the exercises and techniques you can use to get the most out of your game. For the best results, get a good hockey specific training manual, or consult a coach or trainer to help design a workout. Remember though, speed can be improved, so work hard on it, it's could take you from good to great.
