Full Contact Sparring Tips - The Power of Three

What I am going to suggest is that you do the following.

01. Master your defenses (getting and keeping your shields up)

02. Master your offenses (pick three tactics and stick to them)

03. Master the art (fight, fight and fight)

Mastering your Martial Arts Combat Defenses

If you are just starting out in mixed martial arts or kickboxing, you already know the importance of having a good defensive strategy (probably because you have been hit enough times to start to realize you need to learn how to create a shield).

Usually a good martial arts defense is related to proper blocking in combat (creating shields with the arms and legs), reading the opponent (so you can act before it is too late) and quick movements (shuffling, shifting and stepping). I break this defensive shield strategy down in three previous articles (search for, Martial Arts Sparring Defense for beginners - put your shields up).

Once you have your defenses in order you will not get very far if you don't have a good offensive strategy too.

Mastering your Offensive Sparring Techniques

Most professional fighters have only a few key weapons that will take out most of their opponents. This is what you want to do too. Find three offensive moves that work well for you and master them to perfection. This will not only make you unique, but it will also give you something to focus on. You will still have other moves, but 80% of your combat strategy will be to win (or drastically weaken your opponent) with one of these three top moves.

These moves could vary depending on the type of fighter that you are. Perhaps would like to master a deadly punch, a powerful kick and a takedown. Or if you could focus on your ground game and have, sneaky punch, a powerful takedown, and a tap out move. Make the moves around your own style. Some martial artists are excellent at sweeping techniques, while others just never seem to get it right. This doesn't mean that you can't master the moves, but that sometimes we need to focus on what we are more natural at doing.

Also remember there is balance and pros and cons with various tactics:

A punch might be easier to learn but since it is popular - the defender will have more tactics to deal with it. A unique technique might be harder to learn, but since it is rare - the defender will have less experience with defending against it.

Weigh your options, test your strengths and weaknesses and come up with a few good moves designed around YOU. This might only happen after you have had enough sessions in sparring to discover what you like to do and what your natural talents are.

Mastering your Sparring Skills

Practice makes perfect and no matter how much time you are spending learning individual techniques, nothing (and I mean nothing) will replace the NEED for combat experience. This means hours upon hours of fighting.

When I was just starting out in the martial arts, I used to allow the upper belt martial artists use me as a throw dummy. This means that they could practice all of their techniques on me - hour after hour. They learned to master their craft. I was thrown, kicked, punched and for the most part - knocked all over the place. But this training was imperative as it taught me how to fall and decrease any chance of injury I might have in future fights. I was able to build up my toughness for taking blows and I was able to watch a variety of advanced fighters to see how they moved.

I have met a lot of martial artists that spend too much time learning a new lock or tap out move and not enough time sparring and grappling. This limits their true combat skills. I would suggest you learn a few moves and then work hard at getting as much time sparring and grappling as possible.

If you want to be good at fighting, sparring or grappling - then the answer is simple: fight, spar and grapple as much as possible.

NOTE: You will not be able to fight very long if you keep losing brain cells or get injured on a regular basis. It is imperative that you wear the right protective sparring gear. Also, make sure that your opponent has on the same quality gear (when they punch you, the padding they have will determine 50% of your protection too). An opponent's boxing glove is not just to protect their fist.
