Compression Bandages Can Be Useful

When a certain portion of your body is injured, bandages are used to support the area so that it can heal better. While regular bandages are used to cover up an open wound, compression bandages are used to apply pressure on a certain area and help in healing an internal injury. These bandages apply pressure that help in enhancing the blood circulation and prevents swelling. Any type of swelling in the feet area can cause varicose veins or edema in the long run and be a source of pain and discomfort for the patient.

Types of compression bandages

There are primarily two types of compression bandages available. Short stretch compression bandages and long stretch compression bandages. The first type is mostly worn on certain areas of the hands, feet or small areas like fingers. They are very effective in healing lymphedema, venous ulcers, leg ulceration and other small wounds. The short stretch compression bandages concentrate the pressure on the particular area and helps in the healing process. These bandages are designed by medical experts hence they exert only the required amount of pressure on the affected area. The other advantage is that they do not exert higher amount of pressure when the arm or leg is inactive.

The second type of compression bandage is the long stretch compression bandage. These cover larger areas of the body as compared to the short bandages. They apply uniform pressure over the entire area and have higher pressure than the short bandages. Hence it is recommended that they are not worn throughout the entire day and removed when the patient is resting. These are also known as stretch bandages since they can be stretched up to three times of their original size when used on any body part. These are mostly used on patients whose condition is severe. They are more powerful as compared to the short bandages and must be removed before the patient goes to bed.

Compression bandages are recommended for various medical conditions and the type of bandage is dependent on the severity of the condition. This treatment helps in reversing the condition where fluids have accumulated in a certain part of the body. It is also instrumental in retaining the elasticity of the skin and provides results that massage therapy provides.
