A good title, don't you think? - the Step360; Getting "Around" To It. Get it? This is something completely new in the current home exercise market and is sparking tremendous amounts of interest, especially from personal trainers like myself who are always seeking a versatile, good-value piece of home exercise equipment that my clients will actually use.
The concept of step aerobics isn't new of course; it has been around for nearly 60 years, would you believe? - there was such a thing as the Harvard Step Test in the 1950s that was a method of testing people's cardiovascular fitness.
But it was the mid-1980s before an enterprising aerobics instructor called Gin Miller got the idea for exercise classes based on stepping after she was advised to do step ups on to a milk crate to strengthen the muscles around her knees following overuse injury from - you guessed it - too many high impact aerobics classes!
In 1989 Gin finally persuaded Reebok to take an interest in this new fitness craze that was sweeping the US, and the Reebok Step was born, to instant acclaim - classes in gyms were packed and Reebok made a fortune!
And unlike many gimmicky pieces of exercise equipment which are here today and (thankfully) forgotten tomorrow, the Reebok Step has stood the test of time and can still be bought in its almost original form for around $75. And they're good, they last well, put up with a lot of stomping and there's nothing to go wrong. I have one of the original Steps with the coloured risers, which I bought on eBay - it must be 20 years old but it's still perfect.
Only thing wrong with it is it's bulky and a bit ugly to have hanging around the house. That's why I'm so interested in this new Step360.
I have a childish liking for bright colours, so the fire engine red of the circular chambers of the Step360 caught my eye immediately, and it's got a cushioned platform on top that you actually step onto. What makes it clever is that its risers are inflatable - inflate them fully and the step is stable, deflate them a bit and the step becomes more unstable and you can combine the benefits of a step workout with the core training of a wobble board.
Combining the benefits of step exercise with an unstable platform is a clever idea that will definitely increase calorie burn and engage more muscles; just be really, really careful if you are out of condition or not too steady on your legs as you may end up in an undignified heap on the floor.
You might be wise to try the Step360 with just one riser, and inflate it firmly to start with until you get used to the idea, and then challenge yourself further as you get fitter and your muscles get stronger. Low impact step is an unrivalled workout for toning calves, thighs and buns and raises your heart and lung rate as well.
As you can also get elastic cords that attach to your Step360 for an upper body workout, you can easily get a calorie-chomping, full-body, muscle toning workout in around 20 minutes, and the Step360 is pretty enough to live in the corner of your living room. Of course, if I get my mother one she is likely to put a handmade lace cloth on it and use it as a stand for a nice plant instead of exercising with it. But that's another problem I'm getting around to.
I'm Carol J Bartram and I hold qualifications in Personal Training, Nutrition and Pilates. I believe that a healthy lifestyle is a balance of exercise, sensible eating and some relaxation - Work, Eat and Play!

Exercise Swarmer $124.27 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Exercise Swarmer was a military exercise conducted in the spring of 1950 by the United States Air Force, United States Army and United States Navy in the southeastern part of the United States, headquartered at Fort Bragg in the state of North Carolina. Starting on April 24 and running through May 8, the exercise was intended to apply lessons learned during the Berlin Airlift to battlefield logistics, the exercise took place over ten days and involved over 60,000 personnel. Although the achievements of the airlift were initially considered disappointing as opposed to projections, by the time four days of the exercise had passed the results were considered to be the biggest step forwards since World War II by the Joint Chiefs of Staff. However, the United States Air Force determined that existing transport aircraft were inadequate for the cargo needs of the Army, General James Gavin calling for an increase in the supply of C119 cargo aircraft. Exercise for Mood and Anxiety $17.95 Exercise has long been touted anecdotally as an effective tool for mood improvement, but only recently has rigorous science caught up with these claims. There is now overwhelming evidence that regular exercise can help relieve low mood-from feelings of stress and anxiety to full depressive episodes. With Exercise for Mood and Anxiety, Michael Otto and Jasper Smits, well-known authorities on cognitive behavioral therapy, take their empirically-based mood regulation strategy from the clinic to the general public. Written for those with diagnosed mood disorders as well as those who simply need a new strategy for managing the low mood and stress that is an everyday part of life, this book provides readers with step-by-step guidance on how to start and maintain an exercise program geared towards improving mood, with a particular emphasis on understanding the relationship between mood and motivation. Readers learn to attend carefully to mood states prior to and following physical activity in order to leverage the full benefits of exercise, and that the trick to maintaining an exercise program is not in applying more effort, but in arranging one's environment so that less effort is needed. As a result readers not only acquire effective strategies for adopting a successful program, but are introduced to a broader philosophy for enhancing overall well-being. Providing patient vignettes, rich examples, and extensive step-by-step guidance on overcoming the obstacles that prevent adoption of regular exercise for mood, Exercise for Mood and Anxiety is a unique translation of scientific principles of clinical and social psychology into an action-based strategy for mood change. |

Exercise for Mood and Anxiety (Paperback) $24.99 Exercise has long been touted anecdotally as an effective tool to raise spirits or reduce tension, but only recently has rigorous science caught up with these claims. Now there is overwhelming evidence that regular exercise can help relieve everything from common feelings of stress and anxiety to full-blown depression. With Exercise for Mood and Anxiety, well-known authorities Michael Otto and Jasper Smits bring their clinically tested exercise program to the general public. Written for those who need a more effective way to manage everyday low mood and stress--as well as those diagnosed with more serious mood disorders--this book provides readers with step-by-step guidance on how to start and maintain an exercise program geared towards improving mood. Equally important, the book sheds much light on the all-important issue of motivation. Most Americans quickly fall off the exercise wagon. This book helps demystify the traps of good intentions and the pitfalls that derail exercise attempts. How can you get yourself to exercise when you are tired, distracted, or stressed? What should you pay attention to during a walk or a run? How should you prepare yourself so that getting out for a run is not harder than the run itself? In answering these questions, the authors not only provide readers with effective strategies for adopting a successful program, but also introduce the principles that will help them keep with the program for the long haul. Providing rich examples and practical advice on overcoming the obstacles to a regular exercise program, Exercise for Mood and Anxiety will help readers feel happier and less stressed now--and, as they stay with this program, improve their fitness and health in the future. |
