Strictly speaking, Krav Maga is not actually a martial art in the traditional sense.
Whereas martial arts like karate have spiritual and sporting elements, it has one real purpose: to save your life and neutralize your attacker as quickly as possible. There are no fancy spinning back-kicks that look great on television but will put you at risk in a real life fight, Krav Maga techniques are based on simple, instinctive movements that you will be able to carry out when you find yourself in the stressful situation of being physically attacked.
Also unlike in traditional martial arts, when you train in Krav Maga you spend your time learning how to defend realistic attacks and and how to counter attack and not on movements that are useless in the real world or on perfecting "forms" like the Kata in karate. Unfortunately, many martial art black belts have found that the skills they have spent years perfecting let them down when attacked by a common thug.
Techniques include strikes using the knees and elbows, kicks (usually to the groin or legs when standing), punches and even headbutts. It's not pretty, but it is brutally effective and may just save your life.
Training in Krav Maga also helps you prepare for the mental aspect of defending yourself against attack. Not only do you train to defend against multiple attackers, you will learn how to defend yourself in a number of everyday situations: how to defend against attacks when seated for example. You will also learn how to defend against various weapons including knives and firearms, and when necessary how to improvise weapons from ordinary items around you such as a chair, for example.
There are no off-limit techniques in Krav Maga, if you are being attacked it is vital you use whatever force necessary to defend your life, or that of your loved ones. However you will also learn how to avoid potentially dangerous situations and how to de-escalate a confrontation, only resorting to a physical level when it is clear your well being is threatened.
Originally developed by Imrich Lichtenfeld for the Israeli military, it's effectiveness in real life conflict has seen Krav Maga techniques adopted by agencies around the world who's members find themselves in dangerous situations on a regular basis. However, it is also growing in popularity with the civilian population, and today men, women and children train in Krav Maga in the knowledge that they are learning an effective, proven form of self defense.

Legitimate SelfDefence in International Law $101.96 This work examines the concept of selfdefence in the context of International Law. The author takes a look at the various categories of the concept, and makes a critical analysis of the justification of selfdefence in the context of modern day warfare. It further highlights the strains placed upon the trilogy of immediacy, necessity and proportionality, which circumscribes the use of force in diverse military situations Author: Brimah, Josephus Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 60 Publication Date: 2010/12/21 Language: English Dimensions: 6.00 x 9.02 x 0.14 inches |

Preemptive SelfDefence in the Age of Terror $106.74 This is an important topic and very relevant for Pakistans ongoing undeclared war. The work is grounded in the mainstream literature on international law and it elaborates different perspectives on international law. The historical development of the concept of preemptive selfdefence under international law that is traced leaves no doubt that prevailing interpretations are in fact political interpretations of our existing legal framework justified by reliance on socially constructed natural law. This descriptive work exposes gaps in current international law that needs to be addressed for realities of our complex twenty first century. Without such updating international law will continue to be a tool in the hands of the dominant and will not promote ethical and just practices, it intends to uphold. |

Interventions and Techniques $35.93 Interventions and Techniques focuses on specific techniques and interventions therapists use to produce change. This volume describes, defines, and demonstrates the clinical applications of these techniques throughout diverse approaches to treatment. Some schools of Psychotherapy do not claim to contain techniques, a claim which this book examines. However, all schools describe some contextual, communication, or interaction models that easily lend themselves to classifications of techniques or the intervention processes. Written in clear, concise language, Interventions and Techniques presents a thoughtful examination of the conceptual framework upon which psychotherapy is built. It will be of interest to students and practitioners in fields such as: clinical psychology, counselling, social work and psychotherapy. |

Group Techniques $37.76 Far more than a recipe book of techniques that readers can pull out at the right time, this book encourages readers not only to use techniques sensitively and creatively in their own groups, but also to go one step further to invent their own techniques. The authors draw on their combined experiences as teachers, as consultants to mental-health professionals, and as private practitioners to provide readers with a realistic approach to group work. Emphasizing that techniques are means, not ends, the book is designed to enhance the group leader's ability to generate a therapeutic and human rapport between leader and members. Types of techniques presented in the book include creating trust, dealing with resistance, starting a session, working with dreams, working with intense emotions, and ending a session. |
