Have you decided to run a 5k, but your fitness level leaves much to be desired? Well the good news is that learning how to get in shape for a 5k is not as difficult as you may think. With a little consistency you will be running farther and feeling better than you ever thought you could! Below are some suggestions to help you get into shape for a 5k run.
First, get checked over by a doctor. Especially if you have had previous injuries or if you have not exercised in a while. The saying "an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure" is especially true in running. You cannot ignore major pains and expect them to go away.
Start slow. I cannot stress this enough. Especially if the only running you have done in a while is to the bathroom. At first, you will do more walking than running anyway. The idea is to get your body used to moving. A good tip, especially for beginners, is to start with one minute of running followed by a minute and a half of walking. Alternate that for 20 to 30 minutes until that is comfortable, perhaps a week or two. Then increase the running to a minute and a half and walk for two minutes. Get the idea? You are trying to establish consistent increases in your workout. There is no need to rush this. Give your body time to adjust and recover.
Investing in a good pair of running shoes will help make your exercise sessions easier. It will also lessen your chances of injury. If you have run before, you probably will not have much difficulty in selecting a shoe, but for beginners, it is a good idea to go to a specialty store that focuses on running. That way, you can get the assistance of someone who can help you select a shoe based on your individual needs.
If you do nothing else to change your diet, make sure to increase your water intake. Drinking enough water is crucial for proper body function, and whenever you add stress (i.e. exercising) to your body, the importance of getting enough water increases. Make sure to stay hydrated, especially when exercising in a hot or humid environment. Many people prefer the taste of sports drinks or sports water enhanced with electrolytes and carbohydrates. This is fine, and may even be preferable to water in very hot environments or race conditions.
Many runners stretch before a run, but stretching after a run helps prevent soreness and encourages the muscles to recover and repair themselves more efficiently. Make it a habit to stretch after your exercise sessions as well to help with recovery and to prevent injury.
Every successful endeavor starts with a plan. If you are looking to improve your fitness level or get a detailed step by step plan designed to get you off the couch and on the road to running a 5k, the information provided at prepare2run5k.info has what you need. Even if you do not take advantage of the plans found there, make sure to come up with a realistic plan that you can stick with.
Remember, consistency is the key to anything, and like Henry Ford said, "Nothing is particularly hard if you divide it into small jobs." Getting in shape for a 5k run will take some time. Don't attempt to go at this like a contestant on "The Biggest Loser." Have fun with it, be consistent, and before you know it, you'll be crossing that finish line!
