Hunters and other gun owners have worn shooting gloves for years. They help to protect hands from being damaged by the gun's actions and recoil. However people who primarily use handguns, as opposed to those using long guns, are in even more need of specifically designed gloves that will prevent neural damage to the user's hands and arms.

When a person shoots for any extended time with a handgun, he immediately puts a lot of stress on nerves that run from the base of the fingers all the way up the arm. This stress can result in the shooter putting a lot of stress on these nerves or even ending up with carpal tunnel syndrome. With repeated use, a handgun shooter can end up with swollen fingers or a numb or tingling hand and arm. Wearing proper gloves can help prevent, or at least greatly minimize this from happening.

Shooting gloves must have several specific properties in order to be really useful to the handgun user. First of all it is extremely important that the glove provides a non-slip grip as you really would not want to lose control of the gun. It should also be thin enough that the person wielding the gun can still feel the gun in his hand. Finally, it should offer protection to the shooter's hand and arm.

Typically, a well made shooting glove will have a padded palm that may extend up into the fingers and thumb, and it may also have the index finger cut off so that the shooter can get a good feel of the trigger, or in some instances depending on the brand, all of the fingers will be cut off.

Some also have padding on the back of the glove that extends up the middle finger. A good pair of shooting gloves may have different designs for each hand. For example, the right hand glove will be designed to protect the hand that is holding the hand gun. The left hand glove may be designed with additional back of the hand support and padding and non slip palm.
