The Nunchucks, or the nunchaku to give them the proper name, are one of the most popular martial arts weapons to learn, and that is because they are also the best fun to use. They make a great show off weapon and are good for creative fun and play because of all the tricks and combinations that you can do using them.

Although it is always better to go to classes run by a qualified instructor for any kind of martial arts technique, learning how to use the nunchucks from books, DVDs, and even online videos (there are thousands on YouTube) is actually much easier than most martial arts techniques. That is because when you are learning the nunchucks it is all about drills and 'forms' that you perform on your own, and unlike self defense techniques these drills are what its all about, so you don't need to practice with a partner or be able to learn how to use them in a high stress street fighting situation, as that is not what learning the nunhcucks is about.

The nunchucks are all about speed, and the most difficult thing is making the grabs reliably. This means that even when you have learned a drill or technique you should still keep practicing it over and over again many times to build up the speed that you can do it at and to improve your skill to the level where you never miss.

As you will be swinging a weapon around your body at high speed and with full control at first you should never ever use a real wood or metal set of nunchucks for learning with. You should always get yourself a soft padded foam practice set to use, otherwise I guarantee that you will do yourself an injury when you hit yourself on the head or in the groin at high speed.

At an advanced level you would then take some of the things you have learned with one weapon, and perform them with one in each hand. You should also go beyond set forms to be more creative.
