Knee Braces for Beginners
I understand from personal experience that choosing your first knee brace may be a confusing experience. The most important consideration when selecting knee braces will be the type and severity of your injury. When the wrong knee brace is selected you will do more damage to an already injured knee. For that reason it really is advisable to get your medical professional's advice before selecting any knee supports. The level of support you need is also an important factor because not enough support might cause more damage and too much support can weaken your body's natural knee support system. The final item to consider in choosing knee supports is the cost. In my opinion if I find a brace that allows me to function as normally as possible, the price tag isn't much of an issue. Hinged Knee Braces contain metal or alloy reinforcements along the sides for maximum lateral or medial stability and support. Hinged knee braces can cost from $30 to many hundred dollars depending on type of hinge and construction on the brace.
Stabilized Knee Braces don't have solid metal hinges but may have additional features to deliver additional support than simply a simple elastic sleeve. At the low end you'll have a neoprene knee brace that provides heat and circulation benefits usually with a opening to keep the patella in place and free of pressure.Many stabilized knee braces have flexible steel springs sewn in the material on the side or have elastic straps the can be adjusted for extra support. These braces are popular Knee pain or injuries like meniscus, tendinitis, bursitis, arthritis or patella problems will benefit from these knee braces.
Wrap Around Knee Braces are simple to use because it's not necessary to slide them on your knee. They simply wrap around around your knee and can be easily adjusted for comfort and support. Most often they don't give the same amount of support as a sized knee support however they have the advantage of adjustable compression for minor knee sprains, arthritis and patella tracking. Some manufacturers have increased the support levels significantly so that you get the advantages of a stabilzed knee brace with the convenience of a wrap around knee brace.
Basic Knee Braces tend to be simple elastic sleeves that pull over your knee and offer minimum support. You can find these simple knee braces in any drug or convenience store.The padded knee support versions are primarily for protection from contact.
