More Grip

So which one hits the middle back muscles such as the middle traps and rhomboids? Both the close grip and the wide grip version of seated rows both hit the lats, but looks like we'll have to go with the wide-grip version. Since your hands are closer, you probably heard that using a close grip on the bar allows you to hit the middle back more.

The main key ingredient here is not the position of your hands, but rather the focus here is the position of your elbows when contracting your lats. Take note of your elbows when the bar is touching your torso during the peak contracted position on the wide grip version.

You are able to imagine a line going across you back in the middle region and also your lats in the upper area. From your elbows because your arms are horizontal to your upper torso region. The muscles in play depends on your line of pull. You can't imagine the same line going across your lats in the upper region and cross the middle of your back when you are using the close grip version. Your lats become the primary play makers when your arms are close and tight into your torso area. Use both types of grips, both close grip and wide grip for ultimate and complete back development during your next back workout. Also, if you're wanting to gain more strength and size to your frame, deadlifts is an excellent choice of exercise.
