The grip on your club is probably the least expensive, least thought about pieces of equipment in your bag. Despite this, it is possibly one of the most important. Consider, the grip of the club is the only part of the club that you actually come into contact with, so it's vital that you choose a grip that is the right size, and made out of the right material for you. If you use a grip that's too small, the club is likely to twist in your hands, and cause you to close down the club face. If you use a grip that's too big, your swing will probably open up before you make contact with the ball.

So, how do you decide what grip is right for you? That depends on a lot of factors, not just how big your hands are. The size of your hands, while easy to measure, only tells you one piece. The easiest way to measure is to use your golf glove, not your hands themselves, as they are easier to see on the club.

Grips come in four sizes, womens, regular, midsize and jumbo. Women is also a men's small, and appropriate for children or people with very small hands. But the size of the grip is only one thing that matters. Grips also have an internal core, that differs, depending on the grip. You need to give that a feel for not only the length of the grip, but also the thickness. Your hands do have more than one measurement, after all. Second, realize that each club has a different shaft. So, you have lots of different measurements to worry about. You need to measure the width of your hand, the thickness of your hand, the thickness of the shaft, and the thickness of the core of the grip. And, because each club is different, you need to do it on each club individually.

I'm constantly amazed at how often golf club manufacturers and golf pro shops sell clubs to people without examining the grip. Sometimes, they don't even mention it. And you'll find that nearly all of the online sites don't show you core size or shaft size when discussing the specs of the club you are buying. They might ask you what size glove you wear, but we just showed how, at best, that's only half the story.

Finally, you need to think about changing your golf grips often. Over time, your grips will harden, slicken, or otherwise actually lose their grip, either on the club, on on its ability to stick in your hand. This is especially true if you keep your clubs exposed to the elements, either in a garage or the trunk of your car. A normal weekend golfer should consider getting their clubs "re-gripped" every season or so. It's a lot cheaper than buying new clubs, that's for certain.
