Matial Arts Karate

Learning Karate through books sounds a bit, I'd say at least "strange" doesn't it?

I guess at least for beginners. After tens of years of practicing Karate like I did, it doesn't sound strange at all anymore. Here's why:

Humans tend to learn quicker and easier when they are either very curios about a topic or if the brain is able to 'connect dots'. This means that when the newly learned content fits in already learned material the brain is able to associate it with an existing context and hence it's easier for the brain to retain the new material. And that's exactly what books offer: Background information and additional material to already existing knowledge.

Hence Karate books are a great way to enhance your understanding of Karate and to learn quicker because you understand and associate newly learned material with an already existing knowledge-context.

I tend to divide Karate books into the following categories:

  • Kihon
  • Kata
  • Kumite
  • Strategy
  • History
  • Dictionaries

Karate techniques can be covered in Kata, Kumite or Kihon books if they are style specific. Advanced techniques can also be covered in general Kumite or (Fighting) Strategy books which are also either style specific or Karate style agnostic.

What to Expect of Books in those Categories

Here's quick rundown on what to expect if you are looking for Karate books in a specific section.

Kihon Karate Books

Books in this section focus on basics. The emphasis is on the correct stances and techniques. Correct techniques include punches (usually fist in beginner books or also open hand techniques or even more special two or one finger techniques like Ippon Ken).

Books in this section tend to either come as several volumes or as a single comprehensive book.

Karate Kata Books

Books in this section are highly likely to be style specific. The reason is that different styles tend to either have completely different Katas or at least different names for the same Kata (often the case if you compare Shito-Ryu and Shotokan Katas).

Kumite Karate Books

Book on Karate Kumite can be style specific or completely style agnostic. Usually pictures will show different fighting stances and positions of hands and movements, but in a style agnostic book it merely reflects the fighters liking.

Strategy Books

Strategy books are most likely Karate style agnostic. Those books usually teach about how to behave in fighting situations or how to behave in a Karate competition.

Karate History Books

Books in this category cover the history and early developments and all the Karate masters involved in the development. Depending on which style they cover and how far they go back in time they most likely will cover associated martial arts as well like e.g. Kung-Fu.

Karate Dictionaries

Dictionaries are important to understand the Japanese terms in your own native language.

Unfortunately there are good and bad books out there. Hence I recommend, you buy your books off a web-site that is dedicated to Karate books, as opposed to Amazon where simply every book will be sold. Look out for web-sites that are run by people who understand and practice Karate themselves. That will save you a lot of time and money.

This book could actually be considered two books in one: a thorough history of Japanese karate-do and a profusely illustrated instruction manual for students of the martial art who have advanced beyond the beginning stages. Concerned about the misinterpretation of Japanese culture in general and karate in particular by many Western practitioners of karate, the author sets out in Part One of his book to trace the history of karate from its probable origins in India (or perhaps Greece) and its transmission in successively more developed forms to China, Okinawa, and then Japan. Relevant aspects of the history of Japan and influences-the samurai ethos, bushido, and Zen Buddhism-on its martial arts are then pointed out. Finally, the author discusses the changes made on the karate brought in from Okinawa due to these influences. Even with all this martial background, however, it is stressed that current karate-do is different in form and philosophy from the early traditions in that modern practice emphasizes karate as a sport, a means of self-defense, or even a way of life, but not as a means of dispatching an opponent. In Part Two the author first demonstrates important points of etiquette to be used in the karate dojo. He follows with well-illustrated instructions of kumite (sparring drills), including those involving two practitioners and those such as the doubleline drill and the circle drill which give practice in facing a number of opponents. Descriptions of many of these are not readily found in other English-language publications. The final chapter presents nine kata, introductory the advanced kata, Sochin and Nijushiho, are rarely seen in print in English. Often de-emphasized in the modern Western practice of karate, the important place of kata in the martial arts as well as their application to self-defense is here stressed. Further features include a history of karate in the United States, an Appendix listing rank requirements in Shotokan karate, and a recommended reading list. All in all, this book will prove to be an excellent source for martial arts historians and practitioners alike.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Mamoru Yamamoto (later called Katsuo) (b. 10 July 1938) began his formal training in the martial arts in Miyakonojo, Japan. He first studied judo, but began training in the Chitoryu style of karate under Dr. Chitose at the age of fifteen In 1959, Yamamoto and his wife Sumiko opened their first dojo in Kitakyushu, Japan in the Fujitani Judo Club. In the early 1960s, Chitose gave Yamamoto permission to start his own branch of ChitoRyu karate under the name of Yoshukan, and in 1963 Chitose changed the third kanji of their branchs name from kan meaning to stand alone to kai meaning association, indicating a potential for growth within the organization. During this early period, Yamamoto worked with Mas Oyama of Kyokushinkai Karate to develop the rules for Japanese full contact sparring to replace the sun dome tournament rule of the time. This rule meant that competitors must spar at full speed but could not make contact with one another, which made judging of fighting very subjective. Includes:The Karate Kid (1984), MPAA Rating: PG The Karate Kid Part II (1986), MPAA Rating: PG The Karate Kid Newly arrived in California from New Jersey, teenager Daniel (Ralph Macchio) almost immediately runs afoul of karate-trained high school bullies. He is rescued by Japanese janitor Miyagi (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita), who agrees to teach Daniel how to harness karate for good instead of brutality. The film culminates in a championship karate bout, pitting Daniel against his sworn enemy Johnny (William Zabka) -- the cruel and thuggish boyfriend of Ali (Elisabeth Shue), with whom Daniel has fallen in love (and vice versa). Real-life karate champ Chuck Norris was offered the role of Kreese, the sadistic coach who goads Johnny into fighting dirty, but Norris turned down the role, refusing to be shown utilizing his skills negatively onscreen. Vastly popular, The Karate Kid spawned three sequels of rapidly descending merit, as well as a Saturday-morning cartoon series. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The Karate Kid Part II This sequel to the 1984 surprise hit The Karate Kid reunites Ralph Macchio as high-schooler Danny and Noriyuki "Pat" Morita as Danny's martial-arts mentor, Miyagi. Picking up where the first film left off, The Karate Kid Part II finds Danny and Miyagi making an emergency trip to Okinawa, where Miyagi's father is dying. Here they revisit Miyagi's childhood sweetheart (Nobu McCarthy), who, Miyagi believes, had been wheedled into an arranged marriage with loose-cannon karate expert Sato (Danny Kamekona). Little does Miyagi realize that the woman is still single; Sato is still around as well, however, and intent on resuming the fight with his old nemesis. Morita agrees; meanwhile, Danny is challenged by Kamekona's pugnacious nephew (Yuji Okumoto). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
