Pole Dancing – a Fitness Art Form

Pole dancing is a form of performing art, that combines dancing and gymnastics. It can be seen as a vertical workout. As a dancing technique it first appeared in America in the 1920s depression, with dancers in traveling shows using a tent pole as a prop. But it gained in popularity as burlesque dancers started using it in their show in the 1950s. Today it is most common performance in gentlemen's club all around the world, mainly performed by strippers.

As a fitness form it gained popularity during the last decade, while increasing awareness about the physical benefits of pole dancing such as general strength and all body fitness. Even thought pole dancing is a sensual dance, never the less there are variety of exercises that can be done to increase strength and flexibility, even without dancing on the pole. It is seen as a way to build strength, increase flexibility, great body shape, but it also has a psychological effect since women or men gain more confidence and self-esteem about their body while having fun.

It is also recommended for women who lack upper body strength. As a form of fitness exercise, pole dancing can burn up to 250 calories per hour if done properly. Part of this kind of exercise is also music. So while dancing you can have music that you like and make the workout an adequate choreography. Working out to the beats of music positively effect on your power of will to workout.

 Today you can find a number of studios offering pole dancing classes, but if you can find a space in your own home you can make an indoor "mini gym" and start working out by using number of online videos and DVD's. If you decide to make pole dancing a home fitness before you engage in any activity

 You should be aware of everything involving this kind of exercise, so you can enjoy with full safety. As in any fitness activity it is strongly recommended to have a basic warm up adequately previously. You should also be aware of safety information. Some basic tips are always wash your hands so they will not be slippery, also you can use some talcum powder, remove rings watches and other jewelry, use a safety mats or any other support. Small bruises are common, but you should go step by step, only do as much as your body can support so you avoid more severe injuries. In time you will be able to do whatever you want, and make your own choreography exercise. So enjoy and have fun.
