What is the Body Mass Index Formula?
Some people will use their body fat percentage in order to figure out if they are healthy or not but other people may use different numbers, such as the body mass index. The body mass index formula that is used in order to determine this number is rather complex. Fortunately, it is not really necessary for you to know the math behind the index, all that is really necessary for you to know is that the BMI, or body mass index can give you a general overview of your health and tip you off to any potential problems that need to be corrected.
The easiest way for you to use the body mass index formula is to use a calculator that is available on the Internet. These calculators can be found on hundreds of different websites but I tend to like to use two or more different websites in order to compare numbers. At times, different factors may be taken into consideration when determining your body mass index and some of them may not even necessarily be true to the actual body mass index formula. Getting two or more measurements, however, can help you do have a general average and will help to show you where you lie on the chart.
Most of us are aware of whether we are overweight or not but one of the shocking things that comes from many people trying out the body mass index formula is the fact that they discover they are considered obese. Obesity is a real problem and in some areas of the world, it is almost considered to be epidemic in proportion. Unfortunately, along with obesity goes a number of other issues such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney failure and the general wear and tear that it puts on the human body. If you discover that you are considered obese according to the body mass index, you should began a program of diet and exercise that will drop your numbers.
It is not really necessary for you to go to extremes in order to lower your body mass index numbers. As a matter of fact, sometimes just losing a certain small percentage of your body fat will be enough to take you down into the comfort zone. In order to do this, you need to cut the amount of calories that you are eating every day or get some exercise in order to increase the amount of calories that you are burning. Even dropping 500 calories below your daily consumption is enough to help you to lose 1 pound every week. You will not miss the 500 calories but you will love the fact that the pound goes away.
Although there are a number of different factors which can be used in order to determine your overall health, the body mass index formula is one that will continue to be used regularly. It's an easy number for you to come up with by using an online calculator and they can give you an overview of your health at a glance.

Correlates of Body Mass Index in Children $113.11 This book is about a study that involved a crosssectional examination of a group of 3rd graders to determine if correlates of child body mass index (BMI) existed. Children from the Jefferson County, Alabama area were recruited as a result of their participation in the Hi5+ dietary intervention project. The results from the study indicate that the prevalence of overweight children is high in this cohort. In addition, it appears that there are several predictors of child BMI in this group of children, including certain portions of the diet as well as several psychosocial variables. It is apparent that in light of the current obesity epidemic, determining potential correlates of increased child BMI is extremely important. Ponderal Index $93.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Ponderal Index PI is a measure of leanness of a person calculated as a relationship between mass and height. It was first proposed 1921 as Corpulence Index by Rohrer. It is similar to the Body mass index, however the mass is normalized with the third power of body height rather than the second power. The body mass index (BMI), or Quetelet index, is a statistical measure which compares a persons weight and height. Though it does not actually measure the percentage of body fat, it is used to estimate a healthy body weight based on a persons height. Due to its ease of measurement and calculation, it is the most widely used diagnostic tool to identify weight problems within a population, usually whether individuals are underweight, overweight or obese. It was invented between 1830 and 1850 by the Belgian polymath Adolphe Quetelet during the course of developing social physics. Body mass index is defined as the individuals body weight divided by the square of his or her height. The formulae universally used in medicine produce a unit of measure of kg/m2. WHO Child Growth Standards - Length/Height-for-age, Weight-for-age, Weight-for-length, Weight-for-height and Body Mass Index-for age $45 A comprehensive review of the uses and interpretation of anthropometric references undertaken by WHO in the early 1990s concluded that new growth curves were needed to replace the existing international reference. To develop new standards, a multi-country study was carried out to collect primary growth data and related information from 8440 healthy breastfed infants and young children from diverse ethnic backgrounds and cultural settings (Brazil, Ghana, India, Norway, Oman and the USA). The first set of growth standards (length/height-for-age, weight-for-age, weight-for-length, weight-for-height and body mass index-for-age) are presented in this report. The curves represent the best description of physiological growth for children under five years of age. The standards depict normal early childhood growth under optimal environmental conditions and can be used to assess children everywhere, regardless of ethnicity, socioeconomic status and type of feeding. This report will be useful to paediatricians and other healthcare providers, nutritionists, policy makers, researchers, national institutes of health, schools of medicine, and professional associations. |
