Mass Index Fat

I have always been a big fan of the simple things in life. As a personal trainer, I find that this rings especially true as clients tend to want results in a fast and simple way. I think that the way weight is calculated is fairly simple but can be made very complicated. I used to work in a life insurance team and a lot of insurance companies use the body mass index to determine whether someone is over weight. It works around four sections, underweight, normal, overweight and obese.

The body mass index is a good measure in some respects but does have certain flaws. For example, when assessing body composition for men, body fat or measurements may be a better way as the body mass index chart doesn't take muscle mass into the equation. My personal body mass index is 26 for example which is classed as overweight but my body fat is about 19% and I am a personal trainer so I don't think I could get away with being overweight (even though 19% body fat won't get me on the front of men's health anytime soon!)

For women the calculation may be slightly more effective in the beginning as women tend to have higher body fat percentages naturally so the body mass index is perhaps a better way until we get slightly more advanced and body fat becomes more of an issue.

In my opinion a mixture of weight, measurements and feelings make the biggest difference to the average person wanting to be healthy. Measurements are very important as they can determine the levels of fat in key areas such as the stomach which can be a true reflection where the potential problem may lie. The fat that stored around the gut is potentially the most dangerous as it surrounds the organs and there is a correlation between excess belly fat and metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes.

My advice would be to do the whole weight analysis if you are concerned, a mixture of weight, measurements and a good old fashion mirror should do the trick! Speak to a doctor if you have concerns or if you are using a personal trainer, they can provide a full weight, measurements and body fat analysis.
