Martial arts equipment has come a long way in the last thirty years. Decades ago, in class we used football and basketball pads for our hands, elbows, shins and fee. Free sparring was pretty much a bare knuckle event and injuries due to lack of any kind of consistent gloves and foot gear, were numerous. A typical night in a karate class in my early days in Goju karate, yielded numerous cuts, black eyes, groin injuries, and frequently more serious broken jaws, noses and ribs. It was understood that we were to use "control" when sparring, but that meant different things to different people.
"Fighters".... people who were not concerned about hurting or being hurt were the class kings as martial arts students who may be very gifted athletically and technically took a back seat. It was common to see one or two dominant students intimidate, beat and injure other, less aggressive students. Karate and Taekwondo schools, generally being intended to produce a well rounded, disciplined student, instead often turned out brutal fighters who went on to tough man contests and professional boxing. These tough guys usually left behind a vast array of injuries among the students of martial arts schools.
As time went on, a more refined approach to martial arts training began to emerge as perceptive teachers knew they couldn't stay in business by allowing a very few unconcerned students to empty their schools through intimidation. Most traditional styles are intended to teach a strong balance between spirit, soul and body, developing respect and discipline as much as physical prowess. The smartest teachers began to get a handle on safety and accommodating people who were technically and athletically gifted without being brutal. It was these students who could go on to win point tournaments and become the best students and eventually instructors. They became well rounded martial artists who were able to carry on the important traditions of martial arts without losing the important fighting and self defense aspects.
As this trend continued to develop and grow, martial arts equipment companies began to take notice and started developing the tools necessary for the emerging martial arts schools to keep their students safe while allowing a full range of free spar training. Padded full hand foam filled vinyl gloves and kicking boots began to show up in schools. Lightweight vinyl head shields with padded temples were developed. Chest and abdomen shields were manufactured and special helmets with face shields for continuous point match free sparring were developed. And as this equipment emerged in martial arts schools, it began to show up in tournaments. For a while, because of all the new equipment available, and all the old equipment still in use, open tournaments looked like a disorganized free for all. But as the equipment began to become standardized, more and more consistency developed and even in the open tournaments, competitors looked more and more similar as time went on.
Today, most well organized martial arts tournaments, whether open or invitational, have specific detailed equipment requirements. Equipment has become pretty standardized, though very colorful as the array of bright colors at nearly any tournament today reveals. But the equipment is lightweight, well padded, and effectively protects the fighters whether it is equipment for point match sparring or heavy/full contact matches. Companies like Century, MACHO Martial Arts, Pro Force, Everlast and others have produced a mind boggling array of excellent martial arts sparring gear.
Today, because of progressive training and modern equipment, traditional martial arts schools are able to continue to focus on hard, intense training, character qualities and developing fighting skills, all while keeping students safe in the process.
