Okay, I admit it. When I was younger I liked chemistry and someday wanted to be a doctor or something "sciency" like that. But then one thing led to another...I graduated college, met a wonderful man, got married, had kids, worked a full time job, and so on. Eventually, the house needed to be cleaned and I had limited time to accomplish that. There had to be a way to simplify the process. I came up with what I call the periodic table of cleaning tips that helped me organize my cleaning not only into individual tasks, but was able to group them into daily, weekly, monthly, seasonal, and even annual tasks. I won't be able to run the entire table for you due to time and space issues, but I think you will get the point I am trying to make and therefore make your cleaning sessions that much quicker and easier.  

I am going to skip daily and jump right into weekly cleaning tips. For my "wipe down or dust" chart I have furniture (and all hard surfaces), appliances and counters. Bathrooms always need a good scrubbing and disinfecting as does the kitchen sink. Sweep and/or mop floors and change sheets weekly also. Be sure to check any other areas of the home that could be a friend to bacteria or mildew (i.e. Doorknobs).  

Monthly cleaning might include "U" (upholstery), "Wb" (waste-baskets), "SG" (stove grates), "Bb" (base-boards and moldings), and depending on the amount of dust in your house, the "Cf" (ceiling fans). For the most part these can be accomplished pretty quickly. Those are some of my periodic table abbreviations.  

Semi-annual cleaning tips might include mattress vacuuming, leather conditioning, wood blind cleaning, drape vacuuming, window washing, stove hood degreasing, refrigerator purging (inside), coffee pot (cycle with vinegar and flush with water after), and even vacuuming the mattresses. Oh yeah, and don't forget the tile grout as it can get way out of hand if left alone too long and vacuuming under the refrigerator (most are easy to move now-a days).  

When was the last time you had the carpet cleaned or vacuumed the stairs, or even wiped down the top of the entertainment center (dust central)? Some of these areas area easy to forget about or flat out ignore...Don't! Remember, new dirt is much easier do clean than old dirt.  

My general tips for smart cleaning also include, cleaning from the top down and always dust first and vacuum last. Be sure to clean one area at a time and don't run from room to room doing silly things and getting distracted. The best strategy is to make a checklist and stick to it. If you have kids, then give them some easy jobs like wiping the base-boards (with a sock on their hand), wiping the door knobs with an antibacterial cloth, or cleaning their bathroom mirror. Be sure that everyone is responsible for picking up after themselves (now there's a novel idea). And remember my general rule for "do we really need this anymore", if you haven't used it in one year then get rid of it!
