Knife Eskrima

"The truth will set you free" is the popular saying, or quote. That may be true, but that doesn't mean it has to be nice. In fact, quite often it can be brutal.

Like this time.

There's a lot of ignorant people out there that haven not really done their research; or, haven't just used common sense and tried it out for themselves. This goes for the subject of knife fighting the most, if not for self defense in general.

I'd guess 3/4's of the stuff people push as realistic knife defense will get you killed. It's all fancy and complicated. But that's not the biggest flaw. The largest problem here is the portrayal of how the attacker will approach you. In these DVD's and books and classes, the attacks assume quaint stances, showing the knife before the attack, and strike at you with slow, exaggerated movements from a a completely unrealistic distance. This is ridiculous. This WILL get you killed!

So what is the truth?

The truth is, you don't have very good chances of surviving a knife attack. And if you do, there's almost no chance at all you will leave un-injured. A knife, in close quarters, is in fact a more scary weapon than a gun. That sounds crazy, but it really isn't. Think about it. Does a pistol harm someone by touching it? No. But a sharp knife can cut you with a relatively mild touch, even if it's just an accident.

How will you really be attacked? It's going to be close. Real close. Like, the guy's almost hugging you. Usually. Sometimes, the guy will show you the knife from a distance and use it as a threat to get something from you. But if not, the guy will just plain walk up to you, pull it quickly from a concealed position, and gut you. It's grim, but it's the truth.

There are things you can do, however. Not much, but it's something.

Do some research. Learn about the odds, and accept them. Go to a school with reality self defense training. There are a few techniques you can use. They are crude and simple, but they could save your life. But most importantly, learn how to avoid and spot these situations.
