Difference Between Heavy and Light BJJ Gi

As many of you may already know, there is a trend going on right now in the Brazilian jiu Jitsu community where most people prefer a light Bjj Gi over a heavy one. Some people choose the lighter one because they want to shed off an extra couple pounds for weigh ins at the Bjj tournament. Others may choose the lighter Bjj Gi simply because it is more comfortable for them. For one reason or another, the preference right now seems to be on the light weight Bjj Gis. So if you are new to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and you are wondering which type of Jiu Jitsu Gi you should go for, I will help you out here.

 

First you should know, traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners wore really heavy Bjj Kimonos and would train for many hours a day in them. At that time they slightly switched from the Judo Kimonos, tweaking them a little to call them a new Bjj Gi. Some of those traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners still prefer heavier Jiu Jitsu Gis over lighter ones simply because they believe they should stick to tradition. However, as mentioned before the newer generation of Bjj fighters is gearing towards the light weight Bjj Gi. So if you are a tradition kind of guy when it comes to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu you would most likely be going with the heavy, typically Gold Weave Gi. And if you are a newer generation bjj guy you would probably be going with the lighter weight Bjj Gi. Both are fine. Technically, the more heavy the Bjj Kimonos are the more sturdy and durable it will be, and the more light it is the less durable it will be.  This means that for training purposes to have your Jiu Jitsu Gi last for a long time you would be going with a heavy Bjj Gi, and if you are looking for a Kimono to compete in you would be going with a light weight Bjj Gi.

 

Heavy Bjj Kimonos are usually labeled as a Gold Weave Gi, and light weight Bjj Kimonos are usually labled as Single Weave or Pearl Weave Gi. When shopping for your new Bjj Gi online and you are unsure if your preferred Jiu Jitsu Gi is light or heavy, simply read the title or description and somewhere in there you should see the world light or heavy to determine which it is. Sometimes, Bjj Gi companies will post the weight of their Bjj Kimonos on each product page which will help you determine if the Jiu Jitsu Gi is the right weight for you. They will typically have the weights listed by size even. For example, an A2 Bjj Gi weighing under 4 pounds is considered really light, whereas a Bjj Gi size A2 weighing over 5 pounds would be considered pretty heavy.
