A street fighter attacks you. You counter simultaneously with a punch or kick AND a check or a block. In a real self-defense situation, you probably don't give a lot of thought to the pain you are causing your enemy. In fact, many defenders would think the more painful, the better. Believe it or not, this attitude is not necessarily the best tactic.
When Your Painful Counter Strike Affects Your Attacker
So, what will your first self-defense move be? You have choices:
* punching the kidneys
* punching the nose
* kicking the shins
* striking a vulnerable area
Have you thought about your follow-up move? What will you do after your initial counter?
Note: One big error in self defense is planning your future moves. You can't choreograph your fight. Many elements will be random ... and your enemy is the wild card. You have to be ready for a lot of different possibilities.
Even if you don't know how the street fight might progress, you can still practice for most likely responses. In which case, do you know how your painful strikes will change the equation?
When the Pain Moves Your Enemy
Let's say you strike to the kidneys -- your attacker, from the pain, is knocked forward. The movement takes him (or her) out of your reach. Now, you'll have to move with your punch, to be able to follow with another hand technique.
Or you may have to kick, now that the distance is greater.
A kick to the groin could make your attacker fall for a minute, out of range of your punch to the face.
Think of all of this street fighting strategy as a game of pool or billiards. You want to know what will happen to the cue ball after it sinks its current shot. You need it to land in position to make another shot. This is the way to play your self-defense situation. You will be a hundred times more efficient, if your punch or kick is already waiting as your enemy's target moves into place.
Elbow strikes and counters are especially suited for setting up your attacker for the next hit -- nice short power techniques -- download my new, free ebooklet, Elbow Strikes and Counters

Excerpt: In martial arts, combat sports, and violence, a kick is a strike using the foot, leg, or knee (the latter is also known as a knee strike). This attack is often used in hand-to-hand combat, especially in stand-up fighting. Kicks play a significant part in many martial arts, such as Taekwondo, Karate, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Capoeira, Silat, Kalarippayattu, while other do not utilize kicks at all, such as judo or boxing. Some arts limit focus on specific targets for the use of kicks such as to attacks on the legs and lower body, while sport martial arts tournaments may only allow kicking above the waist. Various types of kick are described below, but the names used to describe a style of kick vary between arts. In Japanese, mae geri; in Korean, ap chagi. The Front Kick is considered the most basic of all kicks, but it also has wide variety in ways of execution. Delivering front kick involves rising a knee of striking leg to the position in which desired point-of-impact, one's foot and pelvis are on the same line. Then, one should straighten striking leg quickly and make contact with a target area. Generally, one will want to retract one's foot quickly by bending knee again, to prevent opponent from possibly grappling one's striking leg. Depending of fighter's tactical needs, front kick may involve less or more overall body motion. Thrusting one's hip forward in a short, powerful rotating motion is common method of increasing both ... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=16831 |
