Learn to Ride – and Fly – on Razor Kick Scooters

Now that you’ve got your Razor Kick Scooter, what are you going to with it? If you love videos of shredding freestylers and pro team riders doing gravity-defying flips, you’ll probably be bored just coasting on your Razor. Deep in your heart you know you want to fly.  

So how are you going to fly? First, you have to know how to ride your Razor Kick Scooter the right way before you can start breaking all the rules. If you’re a beginner and haven’t so much as flipped open your Razor Kick Scooter for the first time, there’s an extensive series of videos on expertvillage.com by Elliott Kwong that will help you learn how to ride your scooter, brake correctly, find good terrains to ride and avoid obstacles that could cause falls or crashes. There are also plenty of websites with informative articles for parents who want to teach their children to ride, like those found on ehow.com.  

When you’ve got the basics down, its’ time to start rockin’! There are tons of great amateur demonstration videos on sites like wonderhowto.com that are not only informative but pretty entertaining, too. Most will show you the basic flips and tricks going step-by-step through each maneuver. Often demonstrators will also comment on the areas most people have trouble and give advice from their own experiences on how to overcome challenges to execute the trick successfully. One caution to parents, however: sometimes the language on these videos isn’t always clean so videos are probably better suited for older kids and teens. Preview them yourself first to determine their appropriateness for your child.

When you’re first learning tricks, there are a few things to keep in mind. It’s particularly important to pay attention to foot placement on the deck since where your feet are placed has a huge impact on balancing your center of gravity so that you can take off and land correctly. If you’re off center, you’re going to wipe out, so watch closely and make sure your feet are in the right place.

Freestyling is one of the coolest ways you can express yourself, but remember to be safe. Always wear a helmet -- and knee, elbow and shin pads if you’ve got ‘em. Be careful on your landings off of ramps to avoid serious injury. Keep your scooter in good working condition and do regular maintenance to keep it up. If your scooter goes down, so do you!

The most important thing about learning tricks is to just have fun with them. Whether you’re ready to join the Razor USA Kick Scooter Pro Team - or whether you’ll never be anywhere close - isn’t important, but having a killer time on your Razor Kick Scooter definitely is.
