Tai Chi Chuan
Translated from Chinese, tai chi chuan means "supreme ultimate fist," and is symbolized by the familiar yin-yang symbol, which depicts the forces of light and dark intertwined. Still, most of us recognize the art as one practiced outdoors by millions of senior Chinese citizens.
What most don't realize is that this martial art is as effective a form of hard unarmed combat as it is a soft meditative exercise. Indeed, performing "Crane cools its wings," "Needle sticks at sea bottom," or any of the other memorably named moves can effectively stop an attack
This graceful, slow-moving art is unlike any martial art. Its focus on slowing down and paying attention to the body mesmerize some and bores others. Its admirers claim tai chi chuan improves circulation; promotes health by developing internal energy, or chi; and develops a hard, strong body.
Tai chi chuan revolves around forms, which vary in length from eighteen "postures" to more than one hundred. New students begin by learning a few postures during each lesson. Later, they'll learn prearranged routines containing these postures. When performed one after another, these postures create a ballet-like dance.
Additional Arts: Hapkido, Jujitsu, and Kendo
Depending on where you live, you may find schools that offer additional styles of martial arts, including hapkido, jujitsu, and kendo.
Hapkido is a Korean martial art that combines aikido, judo, and karate techniques. As in aikido, hapkido utilizes wrist and joint twisting, as well as a flowing motion; as in judo, it uses throws and sweeps to gain a smooth leverage; and as in karate, the art incorporates powerful kicks and punches.
Hapkido is based on the idea of opposing forces, countering with circular movements, and penetrating an opponent's defenses. For example, if the attack is strong, it must be received gently, and likewise, if the attack is gentle, it must be countered powerfully. Reacting this way establishes a smooth, perpetual rhythm as well as constant mobility, the hallmarks of hapkido.
The Japanese art of jujitsu is based on suppleness, flexibility, and gentleness. The essence of jujitsu is the ability to move from one technique to another, or a second or even third as needed.
However, jujitsu techniques vary from school to school. One school might emphasize sword techniques, throwing techniques, and kick boxing. Another might focus on aikido combined with karate weapons. In their search for variety, jujitsu instructors have even been known to borrow ideas from ninja training and from wrestling.
Known as the "way of the sword," kendo is a traditional Japanese type of fencing. Practitioners wear samurai dress, a divided skirt worn with an apron, and a jacket worn tucked into the trousers and use a "sword" made from strips of bamboo held together with cord and leather. Beginners are taught how to hold the sword and move in order to strike with maximum speed and efficiency.
