A big part of the martial arts is physical combat between you and an opponent or multiple opponents. Practicing martial arts free form fighting is called, "sparring." The type of sparring that you practice will be dependent on the type of martial arts training you are looking to develop and usually precedes the word, "sparring." For example, full contact sparring is designed to prepare you for fighting that uses the full force of your punches and kicks. There is also weapons sparring which is designed to help you to develop your skills in armed combat. Whichever type of sparring you are looking to practice you will need to wear the correct protective gear for that type of sparring.
This article will discuss what to cover your hands with when practicing contact martial arts such as karate, kickboxing, tae kwon do, mixed martial arts or even weapon arts like kendo bamboo sword fighting.
Depending on your desired martial arts training requirements, you will want the right protection. Here are a few options:
Foam Style Karate Hand Protection
These type of gloves are designed for point sparring or very light contact. If you are training in karate or tae kwon do, this is the type of glove usually used. If you want to focus on boxing or full contact martial arts sparring, then you will need to consider alternative gloves (unless your desire is to be as close to reality as possible in which case a lighter glove serve this purpose). The most popular colors are red or black but blue and silver are also available. If you are a member of a martial arts school and desire to use your sparring gear in class (or as part of a team competition to represent your system), be sure to speak with your instructor to see if there are any specific sparring gloves that are required. Many schools prefer a specific color or style of glove usually made by a specific manufacturer. The most popular companies that make these type of sparring gloves are Macho (as in the Dyna Punch), Proforce (as in the Lightning).
Karate sparring gloves (also known as karate chops) are 1/2" thick foam covered in vinyl. The glove should cover the fist and wrist and often part of the forearm too. Usually only the top and sides of the fist, wrist and forearm are covered leaving the lower part exposed. This helps keep the gloves light and offer improved mobility of the hand. The glove is held to the hand and wrist with a strap and the fingers can fit through slots to improve fist protection. Most of this type of sparring gear can be purchased in matching sets. For example, you can get the hands, feet, shin, chest and headgear of the same type, color and style. You can even purchase thigh protection now if your martial art incorporates light Mauy Thai style kicks to the legs.
The main benefits of this type of sparring gear is that it is very light weight. This allows you to move at a faster pace. The negative points to this type of gear would have to be that they do not always form to the body as well as you might like. You might not be saying, "fits like a glove."
I would suggest this type of sparring gear only if you plan on doing LIGHT contact or point sparring (where touching / counts as a point but full contact is not required).
It also must be noted that your are wearing sparring protection to protect your opponent too and not just your hand and fist.
