There are many martial arts to choose from. It is important to thoroughly research different styles when considering what martial art to study. Beginner Jiu Jitsu is one style many people find enjoyable.

This art began in Japan as a way to defeat an armed opponent without the use of weapons. Since most Japanese samurai wore armor, attacking with strikes proved to be ineffective. Therefore, the use of joint locks, throws, and holds were developed.

There are different forms of Jiu Jitsu. It can be practiced as a traditional martial art. This means there will be emphasis on internal and practical development. Traditional Jiu Jitsu also implements weapon training. The more modern interpretation is the use of this art as a sport. This means the school will participate in competitive tournaments. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is similar, though there is a greater emphasis on ground work.

Entering a school can be intimidating for the beginner Jiu Jitsu practitioner. Once one has selected a school, observe a few classes. This will give you an idea of what to expect, as well as the proper etiquette. Some schools may require an appointment before watching a class.

While all schools are different, most have the same principles. Teachers are to be respected and obeyed. The term "Sensei" is translated as "One who has gone before." They have the knowledge cultivated from years of experience.

The uniform is also important. Some schools will provide their own, other times a student may have to purchase one from a martial arts supply store or online. It is called a "Gi" and will feel uncomfortable at first. The fabric is made from a heavily weighted cotton. The uniform must be strong enough to withstand the hard training ahead. Traditional uniforms are white, though schools may have different color variations. If possible, try on the uniform before buying it. Be sure it allows freedom of movement, especially around the arms and legs.

Beginner students will have a white belt. The colors signify various stages in development. Every school has their own grading and advancement system. Keep in mind that rank is not usually transferable. If a student receives a green belt in karate, that rank cannot be transferred to a Jiu Jitsu school.

The beginner will first learn basic blocking techniques. These are vital, and while seemingly simple, they take time to master. Blocking helps the new student learn to coordinate movement and judge distance. From there, the more advanced throwing and locking techniques can be learned.
