Instep Guards

Being grabbed from behind can be one of the most dangerous self-defense situations one can find themselves in. Not being able to see who has grabbed and not knowing what their intentions are can be a harrowing experience. Typically the attacker will pin the victims arms to their sides. Even the most experienced martial arts practitioners will not be able to defend themselves well in this position. There is one simple but highly effective self-defense move the victim can perform to escape.

The human foot contains 26 bones. That is one quarter of the bones in the entire human body. In addition there are 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments. Many of these are contained on the top of the foot, or instep, and are not very well protected making it one of the most vulnerable parts of the body.

This can be very advantageous to a defender. There are not many vulnerable parts of the body one can attack. And with the arms pinned at the sides there is not too many ways to attack a vulnerable body part. In this situation, the victims legs and feet become a self-defense weapon.

A stomp to the top of the attackers foot can be a very effective self-defense technique. Any number of the small bones in the top of the foot can be broken causing immense pain. If you have ever dropped anything heavy on your instep you understand the intensity of the pain. The stomp can also strain or tear muscles, tendons or ligaments causing pain or disabling the attacker.

The foot stomp is a very effective womens self-defense technique. Women are oftentimes grabbed from behind by larger attackers. Even the smallest women can inflict pain to an assailant with a foot stomp. The stomp can be applied by the victim with or without shoes on. The foot stomp will produce the desired results with all but the heaviest boots worn by the attacker. And even then with enough force their instep can be damaged.

The drawback of this self-defense technique is it needs to be administered quickly after being attacked. Oftentimes a larger attacker will lift their victim off the ground after grabbing them. Once off the ground the assailant could throw the victim to the ground or hold them for an indefinite amount of time. Only if placed back in the original position could the defender use the technique again.

The contact point of this self-defense technique is the heel. The heel is used to target the instep, the ankle or the toes. Driving the heel down through the target with full force will create pain. Breaking bones or tearing ligaments, tendons or muscles will incapacitate the assailant and allow for an escape. A simple yet highly effective self-defense technique that utilizes the arsenal of the human body.
