What to Do When Your World Crashes Around You - The Little Prince Series

Daily Insight into Living Consciously from the Story of The Little Prince

In the present economic climate many are having to alter their lifestyle drastically.

Young people are having a hard time finding their first job after graduation from school or college.

Others  are losing their job, even their home—and sometimes a divorce follows.

Some who imagined they had made sound economic investments for their future have lost much, if not all, of what they were relying on for retirement.

None of us wishes these things to happen. When they do, our initial reaction tends to be one of anxiety and perhaps even despair, especially if we see no solution.

The symbol of the pilot's crashed airplane a thousand miles from any inhabited region is a potent symbol of what large numbers are going through today.

When the Little Prince notices the airplane, he asks what that "object" is. The pilot retorts that it isn't an object but an airplane.

To the degree that we aren't yet centered in our essential being, which is one with the infinite Presence that's the source of all that is, we tend to turn things that provide us with a certain security into more than what they are. We invest ultimate meaning and identity in them.

But they remain just objects—finite passing forms that offer no real security at all.

Not only does the pilot see his airplane as an extension of himself, but his ego is also proud that he knows how to fly. It's a symbol of how our skills, especially our career, become a central aspect of our identity.

But if we can fly, the day will also come when we are no longer able to fly. Age or health will prevent us. What happens to our identity then?

This is a crisis that many are facing in one form or another in our present economic situation. It's also a challenge for many when they retire or their health fails them.

Each of us has a unique set of circumstances and a particular makeup, so it's not possible to give someone a ready-made answer as to what they should do it they lose their job, home, or some other central aspect of their life as they have known it.

In the present situation, people are coming up with all kinds of creative ways to deal with what they are facing.

Some are sharing a home with their family or friends. Others have downsized to greatly reduce their expenditures.

There are individuals who all their life have longed to do something creative or artistic. Faced with loss of their job and an inability to find another, they are reinventing themselves more in line with what their dream has always been.

I can't tell you what's right or even possible for you, but there is a source that can. It's your "inner knower," the divine consciousness that has traditionally been spoken of as the holy spirit.

Having gone through extremely difficult times at moments in my own life, not knowing what I would do for income or where I would live, I have watched how such times can become some of the most transformative experiences in our life, a topic we'll get into more and more in the days ahead as we journey with the airman and the Little Prince.

I don't know what you should do if you are facing dire circumstances, and in your egoic self you may not know either. But I do know that you have in you an essential being that can guide you every step of the way.

The key is to let go of our attachment to the egoic identity we have known so much of our life, ever since we fell into the grip of the societal boa constrictor and lost touch with our true self.

The Little Prince's insight that even the thing we are most attached to and proud of in our life is just an "object" is crucial.

Attachment is a condition of the mind and emotions, not of our true being.

When we live from our conscious center, we find that our identity is no longer hooked to a particular aspect of the material world. Rather it's rooted in the timeless, which allows us to have a fluid identity that can respond to whatever life asks of us without making it mean either something fantastic or something terrible.

The Kingdom of Infinite Number

The Kingdom of Infinite Number

$6.99

Just as bird guides help watchers tell birds apart by their color, songs, and behavior, The Kingdom of Infinite Number is the perfect handbook for identifying numbers in their native habitat. Taking a field guide-like approach, it offers a fresh way of looking at individual numbers and the properties that make them unique, which are also the properties essential for mental computation. The result provides new insights into mathematical patterns and relationships and an increased appreciation for the sheer wonder of numbers. Every number in this book is identified by its "field marks," "similar species," "personality," and "associations." For example, one field mark of the number 6 is that it is the first perfect number-- the sum of its divisors (1, 2, and 3) is equal to the number itself. Thus 28, the next perfect number, is a similar species. And the fact that 6 can easily be broken into 2 and 3 is part of its personality, a trait that is helpful when large numbers are being either multiplied or divided by 6. Associations with 6 include its relationship to the radius of a circle. In addition to such classifications, special attention is paid to dozens of other fascinating numbers, including zero, pi , 10 to the 76th power (the number of particles in the universe), transfinite and other exceptionally larger numbers, and the concept of infinity. Ideal for beginners but organized to appeal to the mathematically literate, The Kingdom of Infinite Number will not only add to readers' enjoyment of mathematics, but to their problem-solving abilities as well.
