Decline Treadmills

Treadmills are without a doubt one of the most popular pieces of fitness equipment, being able to shed those unwanted kilos while providing an excellent cardiovascular workout. However it's hard to keep up with changing treadmill technology as new features and programs seem to be constantly arriving to improve our running experience. We're probably all familiar with the incline function found in most modern treadmills that replicate the uphill running experience however you've probably never seen a decline feature on treadmills. The decline function will be a whole new addition to most treadmill workouts being able to work an entirely different set of muscles from running flat and running on an incline.

Normally we would train simply for the uphill part of a hike or run but the downhill section after you've completed the uphill is often neglected. Downhill hiking or running requires the use of a different set of muscles and since these muscles are largely untrained your knees and joints are likely to feel strained and have increased risk of sustaining an injury. This however is easily overcome with the decline function of a treadmill as it is able to condition the muscles required for downhill activity. In addition, the shock absorbing surface of the treadmill is much easier on your knees and joints than the road and so training these muscles on the treadmill is certainly a lot safer.

Treadmills capable of the decline function will usually be able to decline up to 3% while having an incline of up to 10%. Certainly incorporating uphill, flat and downhill components into your treadmill regime will give your lower body a total workout while the constantly changing surface will keep your body challenged allowing you to lose more weight and burn more calories.

The decline feature certainly is a useful function and will eventually make its way to most treadmills on the market; however there are some treadmills already available which offer this function that will surely help you strengthen those muscles that you haven't been able to target since using the treadmill.
