When you decide to do forearm exercises, the question is, "Which ones?" The answer of course depends on your goals. The simple answer for most of us with average forearm strength is to begin with wrist curls. If you have less than average forearm strength, however, that may not be the right answer for you. If you have been doing wrist curls for a while, or if you already have above average forearm strength, wrist curls also may not be the answer. If you participate in sports and are trying to prevent injury, there may be a better answer.

So, which forearm exercises? So many to choose from - besides the standard wrist curls, and reverse wrist curls, there are hammer curls, Zottman curls, wrist rollers, rubber balls, grippers, thick bar exercises, holds, hangs, and pinches just to mention a few.

If you have very weak forearm strength, the forearm exercises can be the same as for those with above average forearm strength, but you should use different forearm equipment. At one extreme you may be recovering from an injury or are otherwise debilitated, and may require range of motion and assistance against gravity exercises. At the other extreme you may have great forearm strength and want to develop a special ability, such as bending nails or tearing decks of cards. For this kind of strength you will need special equipment.

For those between the two extremes, the next step after wrist curls would be to develop generalized forearm strength. Probably the best exercises for this are sledgehammer exercises. Sledgehammer exercises develop forearm strength in moving the hand from side to side and in twisting the hand. Standard and reverse wrist curls only develop strength in flexion and extension of the wrist. Because they strengthen the forearms in entirely different motions, sledgehammer exercises are probably the best injury prevention exercises of the forearm. They stress the ligaments from different angles than wrist curls, so they strengthen ligaments that get no attention from wrist curls. And they strengthen muscles and tendons that get minimal stimulation from wrist curls.

Weight training rarely directly exercises the forearms. As the other muscles become stronger, the forearms become proportionately weaker. When the forearms are called on to handle the extra weight, they may get strained. Forearm muscle strains are fairly common in weight training. Such a strain can come from something as simple as changing from a straight bar to an E-Z curl bar for curls or triceps extensions.

If you are trying to develop forearm strength for other sports, you need all around forearm strength - not just in flexion and extension. Grabbing a jersey, arm or leg may twist or torque your wrist in an unpredictable direction. You need strength in all directions. This is where sledgehammer exercises can be a big help.
