To my mind, the hands and forearms are among the muscles to which not enough attention is paid. Though grip strength training, hand strengthening and forearm exercises are unlikely to help you build massive new muscles, they will promote an increase in functional strength. Overall forearm strength is a necessity for several types of lifts. Anyone with weak forearms may be limited in their ability to perform lifts. Also, when you begin performing forearm exercises, you may be astonished at how much better you can execute other lifts. Possessing enhanced grip and hand strength can be helpful for things such as hauling luggage and playing all sorts of sports.

Forearm Training

Improving the strength of your forearms can improve your ability to perform other types of lifts. As an illustration, it is difficult to perform deadlifts and pull ups if you are unable to hold onto the bar itself. Broadly stated, the forearms tend to get a sufficient amount of work just through exercises involving pulling. But, you may realize even greater results if you include other types of forearm movements in your regimen.

When performing forearm movements, I typically like groups of ten repetitions. The reason is that I believe this is an aspect of strength training for which endurance methods are especially applicable. Forearm training is a good starting point for anyone hoping to gain functional strength and improve their ability to perform lifts, but those hoping to go even further should concentrate on hand and grip training.

Grip Training

In my estimation, it is possible to have great forearm strength without hand strength, but impossible to have good hand strength without substantial forearm strength. Both forearm and hand strength is likely to be enhanced by engaging in grip strength training.

In order to correctly engage in hand training, it is important to incorporate training for all grip types. In order to build pinch grip strength, consider grabbing something heavy like a weight plate (or two) between the finger and thumb. You can build supporting grip strength by grasping significantly heavy things, including dumbbells, or by hanging from a chin up bar. It is possible to work the extensor muscles (the ones which facilitate the opening of the hand) by placing rubber bands around the fingers and opening and closing your hands against the resistance.

Hand Strengthening

In order to attain massive grip strength, hand grippers are critical. Regrettably, many of the commercially available models are flimsy and meant for high repetition use. The same effect could be achieved by attempting to squash a tennis ball in your hand. If you want a tremendous strength building workout, I suggest you get Captains of Crush or Heavy Grips. They are products meant for hardcore strength trainers, and you will never lack a challenge, because these grippers offer 350+ lbs of torque resistance. Though I need not articulate a complete workout here, you can always rely on the inverted squeeze, the standard squeeze, and negative squeezes in which you compress the gripper as tightly and for as long a period as possible. Since hands do not require significant recovery time, it is possible to do these routines 4-5 times weekly. However, I typically perform these exercises three days a week.

Anyone who has yet to try grip strength training, hand strength, and forearm exercises should really make an effort to incorporate such movements into their regimen. Increased hand strength will enhance your functional strength and will facilitate smoother performance of exercises involving pulling. Perhaps you will even reach a point where your ability rivals that of Bruce Lee. As a beginning point, simply attempt to gain enough strength to haul a 60lb piece of luggage without relying on its wheels.
