Grappling Kickboxing

If you want to be a better grappler, then you'll want to read this article. Grappling is a specific skill, and there are 3 requirements necessary to learning any skill. Specifically, those are 1.) Slow practice, 2.) Correct form and 3.) Repetitions. After reading this, you will have much clearer understanding of how to learn your grappling and martial arts skills more effectively.
3 Steps Simplified:
The first requirement again is SLOW PRACTICE.
Why slow? Feedback. If you go too fast, both your conscious and subconscious mind can't see what's happening, and you can't get "feedback" as to what you're doing right or wrong. If you can't see what you're doing wrong, you can't correct it. You must go slowly to make micro-adjustments to get to the 2nd requirement, which is correct form.
You must practice with CORRECT FORM. Correct form is what makes your grappling (and all other martial arts techniques) effective. Therefore, if you practice incorrect form, you are ingraining wrong technique. The grappling moves won't be as effective, fast, or ultimately powerful as they would be otherwise. When starting a new skill, think SLOW, not fast. Once you have the correct form, then you concentrate on the 3rd requirement, repetition.
Repetition, or more correctly, HIGH REPETITIONS, builds what is called muscle memory. Muscle memory implies the ability to perform an action quickly and exactly without having to consciously think about each component part of that action. (Sounds like what you're trying to do, doesn't it?) The ONLY way to accomplish that is by performing high repetitions of the action. High repetitions literally condition your nervous system to perform your grappling moves faster and more exact each time while requiring less conscious thought.
Additionally, as your nervous system becomes more efficient at doing the grappling moves, you will use less energy performing the movement. This will give you much better endurance for your fight or competition.
If you don't have at training partner to work with, I recommend getting some grappling dummies to supplement your training. It is a great tool for getting high repetitions.
Now that you understand the components of learning your grappling skills, apply them each and every time you practice new grappling moves. Start off learning every new skill SLOWLY. Go slow enough that you can be certain you are using CORRECT FORM. Once you have correct form, then it's time to start on the HIGH REPETITIONS. This is not just one way to learn your grappling moves, it is the best, most effective way.
