Both systems have their own advantages and disadvantages. This article will highlight how a wind power system works for homes.
The idea of a residential wind power system is to harness the energy of the wind and converts it into usable electricity. This is done by using a wind turbine.
The key components of a wind turbine are the blades, generator, mounting and tail fin. The blades of a home wind generator are made from either wood or high grade PVC pipe. The blades are cut at a special angle and attached to the central core of the generator.
The generator is basically a dynamo with magnets and copper wires surrounding it. To create electric current, the magnet core has to be spun in order to cut through the magnetic fields. The centrifugal energy needed to spin the core is provided by the attached blades.
The function of the tail fin is to keep the blades facing at the direction of the wind. Finally, the entire assembly is mounted on a pole or frame. For maximum efficiency, the wind turbine should be mounted at least 15 feet off the ground.
The electric generator from the wind turbine is to be connected to a charge controller via copper cables. The function of the charge controller is to use the electric current created to charge a series of batteries.
The type of battery most suitable for domestic wind energy system is the true deep cycle type. The best deep cycle batteries are used on electric golf carts. This type of battery is more durable, produce steady flow of electric current and can be discharged to a very low level and yet maintaining its integrity.
Since all battery can only hold Direct Current (DC), a special device known as a power inverter is used to change the DC to Alternate Current (AC). AC is used to run basically all the electrical appliances at home. The next step is to connect an extension cable and pull it throughout the rooms in your home.
Using a wind power generator for your home may not be sufficient to supply the power you will need for your household. Some home owners will opt for a hybrid system where their house is connected to the power grid and yet uses wind power to run a few electrical equipment. Alternatively, you can also use solar to work hand in hand with wind power.
