This seems like a simple thing to do, but it can be a bit tricky, and if you're not careful, it will affect your training. And, if you want cheap MMA fight gear, you may end up spending more money than you want, because you may not get the right gloves for what you need. Buying a set of boxing gloves is a lot like buying the right tool for the job. The reason for this is because it depends on what drill or activity you are doing. Are you buying them for hitting the bag? Or are you looking for a pair for sparring? Do you mostly hit focus mitts? Or do you just like wearing them around your house?...

In this article, I'm going to break it down so that understanding what tool you need to use for the job will allow for a smarter purchase and better training - and so that you can still get cheap MMA fight gear, and not spend more than you should on boxing gloves.

The best way to get advice on anything is to ask someone who is successful in that field. In this case, ask an experience boxer at your gym or go online to a forum. These individuals are always happy to help someone new and guide them in the right direction.

Here are the breakdowns for the different activities and what gloves to use for them:

Focus Mitts: Typically you want lighter gloves for this job, so 10oz or less would be suitable. Even MMA gloves would be appropriate. Lighter gloves will allow for speed in the punches. Many people use 12oz gloves, which are typically used for sparring. This will slow your punches and mess up your punching range. The thickness of the glove will add a few inches making your arm feel longer than it really is. 

Hitting the bag: 10oz or 8oz gloves are good for hitting the bag. Avoid going to heavy or too light in terms of the gloves. If you go too light, you will not have the proper protection for your hands. Going to heavy, on the other hand will slow your punches and also soften up the gloves. This is important in terms of sparring because most people hit the bag with the same gloves they spar with. You may injure your partner if you use heavy gloves for both activities.

Sparring: Most gyms typically don't let people spar until the student gets to a certain level. Once you are ready to spar, purchase 14oz gloves. 12oz are acceptable but 14oz provide more protection. Asking the coach is, again, the best way to go. 

In conclusion, my advice would be to purchase 2 pairs of gloves - a 10oz or 8oz pair and 14oz pair. The smaller gloves can be used for focus mitts and hitting the bag and the heavier glove can be used for sparring. Also, in your MMA classes, you would need MMA gloves so you can grab and strike. This is a great way to get cheap MMA fight gear, by understanding what your needs are.
