Through the progress of technology, the creation of hockey sticks has become more and more complex. Modern hockey sticks are now made of high technology materials like Kevlar which is used in creating bulletproof vests, and carbon fiber which is a material used in space ships and Formula One cars.
Though modern hockey sticks may be lighter and durable than the old ones, many professional hockey players still use the traditional ones that are made of wood. Why? The difference is in the ?feel? of the stick. The best stick handlers in the National Hockey League (NHL) argue that the feel of the modern composite stick is not as good as that of the wooden hockey stick.
The design
A usual regulation hockey stick usually measures around 1.5 meters long with a blade at the end. The blade, measuring between ten to fifteen centimeters, is curved toward the direction you skate while the shaft of the stick is rigid but also flexible. The wooden hockey stick is usually made out of Mulberry wood with fiber glass reinforcements at the blade. The best wooden hockey stick that you can get are those that have hollow core shafts and whose shafts are made from smaller strips of wood. These kinds of wooden sticks are the lightest that you can find in the market today.
The downside
The major problem with wooden sticks is that they are simply not durable. Professional hockey players usually use around three wooden sticks a week. This type of stick may have its downsides but it is still considered the best stick for beginning players. Aside from being a lot cheaper than composite sticks, wooden sticks can bring out the full potential of an aspiring player.

The Draft $9.99 An explosive look at the NFL Draft from the inside out that exposes the multilayered feeding frenzy that swarms around America's top college players. The Draft follows a handful of NFL hopefuls through the ups and downs of the 2004 college football season and the predraft process, culminating with the 2005 draft. Among the prospects are Virginia defensive end Chris Canty, who overcomes a devastating early-season knee injury to reestablish himself as a top draft hopeful, only to suffer a detached retina in a nightclub skirmish; and Fred Gibson, a talented but rail-thin Georgia wide receiver who struggles to put on the weight needed to go over the middle in the NFL. It's a complex environment, with college coaches attempting to protect their "student-athletes" from exploitation (while fully aware that they can only remain competitive if they attract NFL-caliber players to their schools), along with sports agents and NFL scouts trying to stay a step ahead of their competition. These parties provide a multi-angled view of the world of emerging NFL talent. The reader follows the season through the eyes of a host of power players and scouts, from veteran agent Pat Dye Jr. to Jerry Maguire clone Jack Scharf, to the coaching divisions of Florida State University and the University of Virginia---headed by longtime Bill Parcells disciple Al Groh. Also central to the narrative are the Atlanta Falcons and executives Rich McKay and Tim Ruskell (now with Seattle), who use a character-based evaluation system to set their draft board. These parallel stories weave together, culminating in draft weekend, to create a gripping and fascinating look at a world few see from the inside. |
