Crime and Measurement (Paperback) $112.07 As an introductory guide, the goal of this book is to provide students of law enforcement, criminalists, members of the justice system, law enforcement professionals, and anyone interested in the field, a starting point in understanding the pivotal relationship between police, the investigator and the scientist, in service of the law. From the first responder called to a death scene to the final analysis in the courtroom, Crime and Measurement outlines the processes, the rules, the protocols, and the principles of what it takes and what it means to measure and solve crime. Beginning with the definition of all things forensic, chapter one outlines the various branches of the growing field of forensic science and offers a thorough discussion of what constitutes evidence and expert witnesses. Chapter two delves into the history of criminology through a look at the early rise of the police force and the criminalists. In its exploration of the relationship between science and the legal system, this chapter also highlights the seminal work of pioneers such as Alexandre Lacassagne and Edmond Locard founders of legal medicine, as well as Hans Gross, the judicial magistrate who officially brought science and the law together. Going right to the scene of the crime, chapter three focuses on the primary role of police beginning with the requirements of first responders, the rules around barricading a crime scene and a complete overview of the principles of search and recovery. The chapter also examines evidence collection and a special section on the use of alternate light sources in detecting latent evidence and reconstructing crime scenes. Chapters four, five and six discuss the events and protocols around encountering death at a scene, highlight various forms of trauma and outline the processes of death and decomposition respectively. Three methods used by police and forensic scientists in assigning a positive identification to both victim and criminal are thoroughly examine |

Handbook of Molecular Force Spectroscopy $179 Modern materials science and biophysics has increasingly focused on studying and controlling intermolecular interactions on the single-molecule level. The peer-reviewed literature contains an increasing number of studies that either measure the interaction forces directly or use mechanical forces to deform the molecules or trigger structural transitions.Molecular force spectroscopy is the result of unprecedented advances in the capabilities of modern force measurement instruments in the past decade and describes a number of techniques that use mechanical force measurements to study interactions between single molecules and molecular assemblies in chemical and biological systems. Examples of these techniques include atomic force microscopy, optical tweezers, surface forces apparatus, and magnetic tweezers. These techniques typically target a specific range of experimental systems and geometries, but all use mechanical force transducers to apply and detect nanonewton range forces between single molecules in condensed phases.Molecular force spectroscopy measurements have been very important for studies of adhesion and friction forces, where they provided the first truly nanoscale capabilities.Force spectroscopy has been instrumental in understanding mechanical properties and nanoscale dynamics of polymer systems from elasticity to nanoscale phase segregation. In biophysics, applications range from probing protein folding to direct mapping of intermolecular interaction potentials. This volume presents a review of modern force spectroscopy, including fundamentals of intermolecular forces, technical aspects of the force measurements, and practical applications. The Handbook begins with a review of fundamental physics of loading single and multiple chemical bonds on the nanometer scale with a discussion of thermodynamic and kinetic models of binding forces and dissipation effects in nanoscale molecular contacts, covers practical aspects of modern single-molecule level techniques, and concludes with applications of force spectroscopy to chemical and biological processes. Computer modeling of force spectroscopy experiments is addressed as well. In sum, "Handbook of Molecular Force Spectroscopy" is a comprehensive, authoritative guide to planning, understanding, and analyzing modern molecular force spectroscopy experiments with an emphasis on biophysical research. |

Unbalanced Force Mapping Method $97.19 In the present work a method is developed that, using the vibration data gathered from the surface measurement of displacements or velocities, is able to analyze them and to assess the position and length of the structural anoma lies of a beam or shell layered structure. The key idea is to use a standard linear Finite Element Model (hereafter FEM) of the structure to reproduce the balance eect between the inertial and elastic forces in the free vibrating area of the structure. The linear matrix application, representing the FEM, will map the vector space of the measured nodal displacements to the vector space of the applied external nodal forces. From a theoretical point of view the resultant forces must be zero in the nodes under free vibration condition and as a consequence the applied external nodal force vector must be a null vector. A gap between the mathematical model and the real physical model in an homogeneous structure will anyway be present and will results in a force vector dierent from zero with a constant in space mean error distribution. This nonzero value represents the unbalanced forces between the inertial and elastic component due to the model uncertainty. Standard Tension Force $95.59 Transport is an inevitable part of todays life. Load carried on vehicles is exposed to dynamic forces which tend to change its position on a loading platform. This change can influence vehicle driving properties or cause a fall from a vehicle, thus endanger road traffic safety. To prevent this movement load securing equipment is necessary. Web lashings are the most frequently used lashing devices for load securing by lashing. Top over lashing presents the most commonly used lashing method in practice. Securing of load by top over lashing is influenced by pretension in lashing. Pretension is influenced by many parameters. Standard Tension Force measured in laboratory conditions for manufactured lashing devices with tensioner was defined as standard pretension. This work offers measurement results, theoretical background and parameters influencing pretension in lashing for commonly used 50 mm twopiece web lashing with ratchet tensioner. It should be especially useful for professionals such as lashing manufacturers, testing institutes and educational institutions or anyone else, who works with load securing. The Photonic Force Microscope and Its Applications $159.32 The ability of detecting forces and torques at the micro and nano scale is of fundamental importance. The photonic force microscope (PFM) had been employed to measure forces in the range of femto to picoNewton in many dierent elds with exciting applications in biophysics, thermodynamics of small systems, and colloidal physics. Here, after an introductive overview of a typical PFM setup, we discuss the three main aspects necessary to understand the PFM, i.e. optical trapping, Brownian motion in an optical trap, and position detection. In the second part of the book, we describe some applications of the PFM: the measurement of plasmon radiation forces, the photonic torque microscope and the measurement of the torque produced by a vortex light beam, the measurement of the characteristics of microscopic ows, and some applications with trapped cells. Measurement Error $89.95 Over the last 20 years, comprehensive strategies for treating measurement error in complex models and accounting for the use of extra data to estimate measurement error parameters have emerged. Focusing on both established and novel approaches, "Measurement Error: Models, Methods, and Applications" provides an overview of the main techniques and illustrates their application in various models. It describes the impacts of measurement errors on naive analyses that ignore them and presents ways to correct for them across a variety of statistical models, from simple one-sample problems to regression models to more complex mixed and time series models. The book covers correction methods based on known measurement error parameters, replication, internal or external validation data, and, for some models, instrumental variables. It emphasizes the use of several relatively simple methods, moment corrections, regression calibration, simulation extrapolation (SIMEX), modified estimating equation methods, and likelihood techniques. The author uses SAS-IML and Stata to implement many of the techniques in the examples.Accessible to a broad audience, this book explains how to model measurement error, the effects of ignoring it, and how to correct for it. More applied than most books on measurement error, it describes basic models and methods, their uses in a range of application areas, and the associated terminology. |
