Boxing gloves are essential when boxing. In all rings and gyms they are required boxing equipment, and sensibly so. Anyone who gets into a ring to spar, or is punching a punch bag, can do themselves and others an injury without the right equipment.

Boxers gloves are there for protection of the wearer and the person being punched (though the punch bag is less likely to need protecting, your hands certainly do!). Size of the boxing glove.

Sounds obvious I know but many people give it little thought. You want your glove to fit tightly around your hand when you have a hand wrap on (which stabilizes the hand and also protects against fractures), but not too tightly.

Velcro fasteners are great for ensuring a tight fit, and a lot easier to do up than laces!

A thumb-lock or stitching

A vital piece of equipment for boxing gloves, but one many of the cheaper brands don't have. A thumb-lock (or ideally a glove that has the thumb stitched into place) secures the thumb into the boxing glove rather than allowing it free. This helps prevents injuries either to the thumb itself or to the opponent who may get a stray thumb in the eye or mouth.

Before you buy any gloves make sure it either has a thumb lock or, even better, is stitched into place as part of the boxing glove itself.

Boxing Glove Material

It is important that the glove be made of a number of things. Firstly the upperside (the side that will be making contact with an opponent) has to be a soft material to protect your opponent from cuts and abrasions.

However gloves can get very warm and so having the insides made of a variety of breathable mesh is preferred, letting your gloves get air in to cool your hands.
