Dry skin is a common complaint made by people all over the globe, especially those who live in places that are cold and dry. Dry skin is not a serious medical condition, however the itchy discomfort and sight of rough patches of skin does cause much concern for people who happen to suffer from it. Aside from the discomfort and unsightliness, dry skin is also thought to be a contributing factor in the formation of wrinkles and fine lines within the skin.

Various treatments and cures for dry skin have been around for quite some time now, with sufferers of this predicament constantly searching for a better way to stop the suffering.  While dry skin cannot be considered a disease, it is something that people desperately want to rid themselves of. Winter Weather

It is no coincidence that people suffer from dry skin during the winter months. Cold weather is one of the most common causes of dry skin.  Windy conditions and low humidity cause the skin to naturally lose much of its moisture resulting in dry skin. If you happen to reside in a cold climate, it might be a good idea to get a humidifier to help put pack some moisture in the air and keep your skin from looking so scaly. For those of you who live in warmer climates, it is also important to know that air conditioning can also cause the same types of problems.

Getting old

As we age, our skin loses much of its naturally occurring lipids and oils that used to keep it so soft and supple. You have probably noticed how dry your grandparents’ skin always seemed and perhaps wondered if this was in store for you. While getting wrinkled, dry skin is a natural and inevitable process; there is a way to age your skin gracefully by making sure you eat properly and by starting a skin-moisturizing regimen early on.

Genetics

Speaking of grandparents, heredity also plays a crucial role in whether or not you are going to suffer from dry skin.  If many of your family members have dry skin, chances are that you will to. While we cannot change where we come from, knowing that dry skin is a family thing, will be helpful and taking preventive measure against it. The thyroid

Excessive weight gain and sudden weight loss causes dry skin and the main culprit of up and down problems at the scale tends to be the thyroid. The thyroid gland handles your body’s metabolic processes and if it starts acting up, weight problems occur. And along with these weight problems come skin conditions.  If you think you have a thyroid condition it is important to seek medical help as soon as possible so that you may better control it.

As you can see the problem of dry skin is attributed to various different factors and it is important to pinpoint which factor you fit in order to come up with the right strategy to combat it. While dry skin in of itself is not a deadly disease its presence in disconcerting to those who get it. Eliminating dry skin is merely a process of analyzing its underlying problem and taking steps in the right direction towards healthy, soft and supple skin.
