Fighting Techniques That Actually Work
When you watch a martial arts movie, you can see some incredible stuff. The fighting techniques they use are simply beautiful to see. If you were to believe in them, you would think that you could defy the law of gravity, travel freely through the space-time continuum, dodge bullets and move faster than humanly possible.
Unfortunately, that’s not real life. If even the greatest martial artist alive really fought in the style of the movies, it wouldn’t be all that hard to defeat him. Bullets move faster than we can—period. What goes up, must come down, and pretty immediately. And no one can move fast enough to make up for the openings that many of these fighting techniques leave.
For instance, let’s look at the flying spin kick that is so popular. As you jump in the air, there’s a chance for your opponent to make a well placed punch or kick to throw you off balance. As you turn in the air, you expose your back to him, and he has a few chances for a kidney shot. Lastly, if you make it far enough to extend your leg to kick, your groin is exposed. Besides, he can just duck or block the kick, leaving you exposed again. It looks nice in the movies, but it will get your butt kicked.
What really works in a real fight isn’t as elaborate as all that. In fact, the less complicated and showy it is, the better. Foot stomps, groin kicks – things that are normally called “cheap shots” – are key elements to winning in real fighting techniques.
Did you know that you can take people of any size down by twisting their pinky finger? Surely you do, but do you think of it? No matter what your comparative size, you will always be stronger than their pinky fingers.
Here’s an experiment for you. Clench the fingers of your dominant hand into a fist. Imagine that this hand belongs to an opponent who is holding you by the collar. Wrap the fingers of your other hand over this one, where the finger tips are touching and squeeze just until you feel a little pain. It didn’t take a lot of effort, did it? Now imagine if you had squeezed with all your might.
