Exercise Training
![]() |
We've heard all the arguments before and each week it changes - sometimes interval training is your answer to fat loss, and sometimes it's steady state exercise! Just what is the big deal with both, and more importantly, what is best for you at your present physical condition keeping in mind the goals that you have? First, a brief explanation of both:
1. Interval Training Interval training refers to doing a particular exercise (it could be anything from running, swimming, jumping rope, lifting weights 'circuit style') at a high intensity for short bursts followed by periods of rest of lower intensity activity, such as sprinting hard for a measured distance and then walking back to the starting point, or even doing what are known as complexes (for the more athletically inclined and experienced) and then taking a short rest before the next bout.
A lot of coaches prefer interval training because it is supposed to be effective in building up the cardiovascular systems as well as make more well-rounded runners. Many also believe that this type of training is more effective at inducing fat loss than simply training for longer periods of time at a lower intensity.
2. Steady State Exercise This is exercise that is done at a low level and can be maintained for a longer period of time and is mainly aerobic, which means that it burns up a whole lot of oxygen as you exercise. There is no oxygen debt of any kind after the session is finished (your body is not trying to replenish oxygen that it used up during the bout of exercise). This is the category that most jogging, rowing, elliptical trainers etc would fall into.
Steady state exercise has been used by many, and among those who make it a matter of habit to lose fat periodically such as competitive bodybuilders it has long been in use for pre-contest preparations. You are sure to find BB'ers putting in an hour or 2 of treadmill walking or cycling on a a stationary bike before their contests and most will swear by this as their preferred method of conditioning and burning fat.
So, now that we are armed with a little more background information that will allow us to make a good decision on fat loss and interval training versus steady state exercise, we are at the stage where we need to figure out what will be good for us, because that it the bottom line - you will only work with what you find doable, rather than what some Internet coach tells you is right.
The first step is to see what our present capabilities are. Are you able to walk up and down stairs without huffing and puffing? Or do you have to huff and puff and kiss the pavement each time you walk more than 10 feet? When was the last time you did any exercise? What previous sports experience do you have?
Here is a sample progression for you:
Step 1 - Low impact steady state exercise, gradually building up session lengths to up to 40 minutes per session.
Step 2 - Build up intensity with above while maintaining length per session
Step 3 - As possible, begin to do 2 sessions per week where you push hard as prescribed by interval training guidelines along with another 3 steady state sessions.
By the time you get to step 3, you will be ready to take on more intensive types of interval training and make the most of your time in the gym. After all, it's not like you have all day to exercise eh!
