On average, a woman can gain up to 35 pounds during pregnancy. Depending on the weight of the woman to begin with, a doctor may require them to put on additional weight in order to safely carry the baby to term. However, once the woman has given birth, there can be some extra "baggage" left over that wasn't there when they first started. Most mothers have that leftover "baby weight" that they need to get rid of so they can fit back into those jeans they were wearing before they became pregnant.
Most women tend to gain the most pregnancy weight in their thighs and rear-end, as their hips spread. However, women who are overweight before their pregnancy may not gain much weight during their pregnancy, so it may not be likely that they will have to lose much weight to fit back into their pre-pregnancy jeans.
Otherwise, here are some important tips for helping you lose that pregnancy weight.
1. Stay active during pregnancy. Taking a walk, do yoga or stretching exercises can help you stay fit even while you are pregnant.
2. Stay active after pregnancy. Exercise, even with your baby by taking them for a walk. This can be done for 20-30 minutes every day.
3. Drink plenty of water. Keeping your body hydrated with 32 ounces of water every day is good for you and for your baby, especially if you're breastfeeding.
4. Keep the junk food to a minimum. Junk food and excess sugar isn't good for you or your baby when you are breastfeeding. By cutting out this junk food, you could lose 5-10 pounds in a few months.

However, this needs to be within the realms of safe practice. The study on which this book is based is derived from the author's work as a midwife with a special interest in exercise. The main aims of the study were to investigate the effects of undertaking a regular exercise programme during and following pregnancy on psychological well-being, pregnancy and birth outcomes. Data were collected at three time points during and following pregnancy using a variety of outcome measures and were analysed using appropriate statistical testing.
