Many guitar players when first starting out to play the guitar desire to learn how to play the guitar the right way the first time. One such positive practicing habit that you will want to incorporate into your playing as soon as possible is what I call Pinky Power.
Many guitar players just play with the first three left fingers. By adding your left hand pinky to your other guitar playing fingers you will notice a tremendous increase in how you learn beginner guitar.
If you are just learning to play beginner guitar than you now have an awesome opportunity to learn a great strengthening exercise that will strengthen your left hand pinky. This exercise also sounds and looks cool when played properly. This Pinky power warm up exercise works very well on an electric guitar. If you want to really strengthen your pinky then you can double your pinky strength by practicing this exercise on an acoustic guitar. If you are utilizing this exercise on acoustic guitar than depending on the strength of your pinky you will need to be extra patient until you pinky becomes strong enough to play this exercise properly.
Here's "The Beginner Pinky Power Exercise"
1. Place your left First Finger on the 2nd string 5th fret.
2. You will then with your right hand holding your guitar pick pluck only the 2nd string downwards.
3. With your left hand pinky you will now pretend that your pinky is a hammer and as hard as you can hit the 8th fret. Try to have your pinky hold and sustain the note for as long as possible. This motion with your pinky is called in guitar language a 'hammer on."
Try that out a couple of times until you are comfortable playing the first note and then playing the second note as a hammer on. If you are having a hard time hearing the 2nd note you can turn up the volume of your guitar until your pinky is strong enough to be at the same volume as your other fingers.
4. With your pinky still on the 2n string 8th fret you now pretend that your pink is the guitar pick and perform what is called a 'pull off.' When you pull your pinky off the note pull the note off away from you. You should now be left with the sound of the first finger on the 2nd string 5th fret.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 over and over again without using your right hand at all to pluck the 2nd string to create what is called a "hammer on/pull off" technique.
