Exercise Loop

Studies have shown that the average adult contracts about four upper respiratory infections each year. During these times of illness, many people wonder if they should continue their exercise regimen or sports program. As a general rule, these studies suggest that if your illness in above your neck and you don't have a fever, you are OK to continue your regular physical activity. It is best to not overexert yourself and to make sure you listen to your body and respond to its rest and nutritional needs. However, if you contract flu-like symptoms or experience any swollen glands, it is best to suspend excessive physical activity for up to two weeks.

To prevent excessive illness and get your body the nutrition it needs to exercise and perform properly, experts recommend that you maintain a balanced diet that is full of the vitamins and minerals your body needs to function properly. Also important for proper function is to get enough sleep and avoid extended, high intensity workouts that can put your immune system at risk. The best exercise or sports program is one that is moderate and does not put extra stress on your body's immune system. Another way you can make sure you'll be able to exercise regularly is to avoid touching your hands to your face, mouth, and eyes. Your hands can easily transfer germs or bacteria to sensitive places in your body and make it easier for those bacteria to cause problems. Another easy way to keep your immune system in peak working order is to limit your alcohol intake and get a flu shot each year.

These are only a few suggestions that can help you keep your body healthy and make it so you can participate in a regular exercise program. If you have additional concerns, try talking to your doctor about creating a diet and exercise program that is right for you.
