Exercise Kit

The Global Positioning System (GPS) was originally intended for use by the U.S. Department of Defense, but the system has been available for civilians for over 20 years. GPS for runners is one application that has been developed using the system, and it has proved invaluable in helping athletes track their performance and improvement over time. Many models can be connected to a computer and the data downloaded for extensive analysis. An exercise heart rate monitor may be included which allows you to know when you have reached you target heart rate zone by sounding an alarm or visual signal, and you can also see the number of calories you have burned. Many units have a built in rechargeable battery which makes things very convenient.

In addition to GPS for runners, the industry has developed a GPS for walkers and hikers. The GPS device is a superb navigational aid along with an accurate compass and a proper map. The map or compass should be checked regularly with the GPS unit, and may have to be used exclusively in the unlikely event the device is lost or broken. Some people claim that a GPS unit will lead you off a cliff or into a lake. It will if you are not watching where you are going. Like a compass points to magnetic north, the GPS device points at a target, and it is up to the user to use common sense to avoid cliffs, lakes and any other barriers to the desired destination.

Many athletes who use GPS for runners are always on the lookout for a good GPS pedometer unit. The pedometer attaches to your athletic shoe and can measure your pace in strides per minute, distance covered and calories burned. Garmin GPS watches are also useful for runners. One unique feature of the watch is the proprietary "HotFix" which maintains a signal even among overhead obstacles like buildings, bridges and tree branches. The watch is able to connect wirelessly with training aids such as foot pods and cadence sensors and transfer the data to a computer. It is also waterproof for those who need swimming data.
