Exercise For Children

Winning the Exercise Battle with our Children
In this country, as in all countries, there is the problem of all children needing to get more exercise. Yet we continue to decrease the availability of safe exercise time periods with in the school day. There is a declining amount of open areas for young people to run and play safely in. As parents and concerned adults it is our responsibility to provide as many opportunities to exercise to our young people as possible. The key is to make it fun and ongoing!
With the availability of computers, televisions, video gaming systems, text messaging and the cell phone being available in more homes than ever it is not uncommon for a child to get little or no consistent exercise. This is not good for any of us, but especially young people for many reasons.
- If a child is not getting exercise, they are going to be at an increased risk of being overweight and obese as they get older.
- A young persons self esteem, many times is tied into their physical appearance.
- Their personal safety becomes an issue, if they can not escape, they become a victim.
Frequently poor exercise and poor eating habits go hand in hand. As children grow and develop, it is very important for them to be getting exercise, rest and wholesome food because their bodies need them so that their muscles grow, and their hearts and lungs can fully develop. This means that any and all exercise for children is very important. Sedentary lifestyles become habit forming!
If you are concerned that your child is not getting the right amount of exercise, there are several things that you can do.
- First of all, enforce rules about healthy eating for your children. You have to ensure that your entire family is eating well, and that children are eating healthy foods.
- You also have to make sure that you are not letting your children eat in front of the television or the computer.
- Make sure that you are setting a good example; demonstrate through your actions that health is an important family value.
- Integrate physical activities in to the family schedule; make the time to be healthy.
Also, limit on how much television and computer and video game time young people are allowed during the day. Make sure that you enforce these rules, and encourage them to do other things while the computer, games and television are turned off. (Playing games, reading, interacting with friends and family time are how children develop their minds and improve their social skills.)
One of the best ways that you can encourage your children or any child to get the right kind of exercise is if you have family exercise periods. You should try to find a time each day where your family can get together and do something fun outside, even if it is simply playing catch, bike riding, and yard work or going for a walk. These do not have to be lengthy, grueling workouts! Ideally the family will develop the mindset that these activities are fun and relaxed times to look forward too, not dread! Having fun and physically moving is the goal.
All of this can turn into great family experiences, and it can also be a wonderful way for your family to get healthy together. If you are working out together, you are giving all the members of your family the best possible chance to be in good health. It does require that someone take the lead and start. Small steps and successes, lead to big improvements over the long term!
The sooner we are able to implement consistent exercise periods into childrens lives, the better for them in the long run. If exercising has been a part of their entire lives, they will carry that same behavior and healthy habit into adulthood and pass it on to their children.
Winning the exercise battle is a long term game. It takes commitment, patience, persistence and planning. Make it a goal. Does that mean that you will be able to be successful every day? No. Life has a way of dictating some things, but the effort is well rewarded when we have healthy, happy and safe children who pass those same attributes on to their children!
The habit of a healthy lifestyle begins at home. Our school systems and community support agencies can only provide information, families must provide the action.

Children and Play $116.95 The role of play in child development is a source of ongoing interest and debate. In this book, renowned expert Peter Smith offers an expansive definition of the term “play”, taking an in-depth look at its impact on children, as well as its adaptive value for birds and mammals, including primates. Using both contemporary and classic research, Smith examines how different age groups and sexes participate in a wide variety of play, including exercise and rough-and- tumble play, fantasy play and imaginary friends, and play with objects. The book gauges the function of play in early childhood education and makes the case for and against recess breaks in school. How play occurs in different societies and among various populations – including children with special needs – is also explored. With its comprehensive coverage of theoretical, historical, cross-cultural, and evolutionary perspectives, Children and Play holds significant insights for parents, educators, and clinicians. |
